Get it at costco...

No i'm not joking. Diamonds are diamonds, where you get it should not matter. COstco does not sell any diamond that is less than "investment grade" and they are all internationally certified. You can buy the diamond and have it set elsewhere or have it set at costco.

No question...I didn't go to Costco, but as long as it's GIA certified and you know the specs, who cares? Diamonds are a commodity and no matter what Tiffany tells you, it's the same crap. Diamonds come from about 2 places in the world, no matter where you get them.

yup. And debeers probably still controls about 90% of diamond mining in the world. They control supply and basically set the price by how they distribute. if they were to open their vault and bring their inventory to market, diamonds would be worthless.

debeers created the demand for engagement rings, and they control it all. its all complete bullshit, but we all have to buy into it for our significant others.

Yes, I'm certain diamonds would be drastically reduced in terms of value. But that doesn't take away from the fact that this comment isn't of much value for the following reasons:

A - if someone who has non-perishable goods, not subject to obsolescence, decides to bring all their inventory to market right away, that will obviously decrease the value people are willing to pay for it as supply will outstrip demand and therefore to sell it, the price goes lower to create demand. So it's not just DeBeers that's holding onto their inventory - others do it as well. It's just smart business.

B - why would someone that supplies a commodity / other good have to sell all their inventory (ie. OPEC, dairy producers, etc) just because they have it? They shouldn't have to - nor should the purchaser be required to buy it. The point of a free market.

Our jeweler gave us a great piece of advice. He said you should never buy a stone to impress only your jeweler. Literally 100% of the rest of the world will not be able to spot minor inclusions in your stone. Size is the most obvious, followed by color to the layperson. A better cut will also give you much more sparkle.

Fuck the jeweler. The jeweler sure as shit ain't paying for it. Pick out and purchase what YOU like

Your other half should just be happy you're giving her a ring and proposing. The whole buying to your pay check or certain level based on peer pressure is plain stupid. I guess I lucked out as I proposed to my wife with the ring my mother gave me that my dad gave her. The sentimental value and the story behind the rings is worth more than the most expensive diamond one can buy in the world....ie it's priceless.

Yeah, buying a ring costing several multiples of your paycheck is nuts.

This is possibly the worst financial "advice" in the world, and I am so sick of people parroting it. And the best part is that the people following that advice -- say they make $2,000 or 3,000/check -- are the very people who can least afford to outlay $6,000 - $9,000 on a ring. Which means they're financing it on their Visa at 19.99% (or whatever usurious rate we charge poor people, now).

It is literally people who are better off telling a lower-middle-class person to put themselves in debt so they can marry someone, have kids, and be in more debt. It's ridiculous.

/rant.

PS - not very many people, in my experience, who are clearing $100k after taxes (i.e., about $8k/check), are out there spending $25-50k on an engagement ring. Because people who have money keep it by not doing dumb shit like that. Do you want a $50,000 piece of carbon, or do you want half of a 20% down payment for a $500,000 home?

Agree. Amazed at the marketing that goes on to explain how someone's diamonds are better because of the store they came from. I would also consider Costco and as long as you understand and be assured what you are buying no reason to not consider any other reputable source.

If I had to do it over... I would prioritize carat (size), color, cut and then very last clarity.

I started out wanting the best clarity and using a loupe to make sure any occlusions were not obvious, but in the end realized the clarity doesn't really matter to the naked eye (as long as it is not a really bad rating). The size and color are most obvious in everyday display.

I would also go with bluenile or consider cultured diamonds.

IMO, don't get duped into the clarity "value/premium" discussion.

The 3 most important aspects are size, cut and color. To most people that's what they see, basically how big is the damn rock and does it sparkle. The cut is very important to make it shine, and there are many proprietary ways of making a cut, so the true test here is does that thing shine. Does it pass the basic eye test?

The clarity is regarding "specks" inside the diamond, and you know how you put those magnifying glasses on to look it it? That's what you'll have to do to discern clarity. It's overrated, and your inlaws and boss ain't gonna put some glasses on to inspect it for specks.

If I were to do it again, I would aim high for the best color, and downplay the clarity. My wife's ring is pretty fucking clear, but he color could be better...

The men here claiming that cut or coulour matter are just that, men. Most women don't give a fuck and can barely tell the difference anyway, they just want to flaunt a large stone to their friends.

it really is that simple and the modern trend is for really, really huge rings with many small stones, they look absurd but that's what's doing the rounds.

Well, I would not say that $20K is nothing! The average is around $4K, so $20K would be significantly above the statistical average.
Ref: http://www.nytimes.com/2014/02/01/yo...dget.html?_r=1

Now, mind you, everyone HERE IN OT is super rich, has a supermodel wife, a Lambo as their other car, and has a 12" dick... But everywhere else, $20K is not nothing. Just saying.

PS: Except bimmette , who commands an army of such slaves, Biorin and Lups , who have far larger penises, and Sara504 , who only cares about the rich part.

I didn't say it was "nothing" I said I'm aware it's not unusual for people to spend that on a diamond. I also previously said there was no way I could afford that myself.
