The thing is the M3 makes a low amount of toque. Any car with not much toque is not going to feel fast. However if you have a car with a decent amount of touqe it will feel faster.

I have noticted from a lot of cars I have ridden in while racing is that the cars might be equally fast but the car that has more touqe than the other usually always feels faster, they seem to thow you back in the seat more.
A chipped 335I will have significantly more torque than the E92 M3.

Just my assumption, I will have to wait until I drive the new M3 but I was let down at the amount of toque it had when the spec where released. Even on fifth gears review they said it runs out of grunt where then where trying to power slide it.

I was about to say this actually. I'm sure the M3 is fast, but it probably won't feel like it. Oh well, I don't need a car to go 0-60 in <4.5 seconds to be happy. I mean, there needs to be an end to the madness someday, ya know?

RRGOO7...

...I agree man, modded 335s putting down 300+ft lbs of torque at the wheels is going to feel faster than the M3 until that V8 hits the last 2000 rpms, where the most hp is.

I think BMW should have made a bespoke inline TT 6 for the new M3 (better pistons, more boost, etc).

I-6s are inherently torque-rich, perfectly balanced (1/2 of a v12), and if they got 400 hp from it, you better believe that it would be putting down at least that much torque therefore smoking this new V8.

And for the record, Alpina did a mild version of what I just described above in their B3.

Horsepower is great, but torque-rich cars more represent the luxury/sport segment.

Honestly my friend has an E46 M3 and that car actually feels faster. I was a bit confused after getting out of the car. A couple times i even checked to make sure we had the M Mode on. I wish we tested the dam Launch Control though i completely forgot about that.
Thanks for sharing your experience. Two points:
When you're talking 'bout M Mode, you mean the M Dynamic Mode which loosens the DSC interference? This has not much to do with how fast the car accelerates from 50mph on, which leads me to the question which throttle mapping you did use while your test (co)drive? Normal, Sport or Sport Plus?

Besides that unless you (co)drove an M3 with the new Double clutch transmission (unlikely) there's no such thing as a launch control.

Best regards, south

gonzo,

I hope he and others didn't think I was disbelieving his comments only I couldn't understand how someone with as I believed at the time a stock 335i would find the new M3 to feel weak at 6000rpm and above.

I am not into tuning production cars so am unfamiliar with the brand or what the car would be kicking out, figures explain a lot more to me than names.

Sorry for my lack of knowledge on the subject.

I know you are cool. I just wanted to show what he had. I don't know his #'s, but I would bet $1 his car is producing some great torque #'s. XEDE is a piggyback on the ECU, catless downpipes with free exhaust ='s some power.

It's not a crime to make mistakes haha.

To clarify, a stock 335i and a stock M3 already have very similar amounts of torque (295 for the M3 and ~300 for the 335i, and the 335i's torque peaks sooner) and with a piggyback increasing boost in the low-midrange department his 335i is probably a good deal quicker than an M3.

My bet is you probably went in expecting to be blown away by the new M3 and it just wasn't what you expected it to be in the acceleration department and this was compounded by the fact that your car is already about as quick.

I appreciate the honesty though.

I haven't seen any evidence that a tuned 335i will be "a good deal quicker than an M3". What are the chipped 335i's doing in the quarter?

Isn't the old saying "Torque feels fast, horsepower is fast"

i hope you dont think a piggy back only upgrades the torque lol...

with his set up he should be putting 370-380 to the wheels if his car adapted well

which would either be neck and neck, or about as quick as an M3 with the UMPH factor of his torque that the M3 lacks

How do you use the launch control in the M3? Is there a button?

Saw two coupes (one red and one titanium silver) on Valentine's Day when they were here in Monterey at Laguna Seca. Made my day. LOL.....It's a hot car.
