I would love moving away too. My point was that the wife is the one collecting most of the miles in this move, so you might want to map out your kids hobbies sights and family's normal routines and then you get a fair assessment of the normal miles.

Sheesh.

I'm lucky, i avoid the traffic.
In the morning i drive down i91, all the traffic jam on i91 is on the New haven exit lane. When i get into i95 north, all the traffic is on the i95 south.
In the afternoon, i drive back i95 south, all the traffic is on the New haven exit lane. So it's funny how i drive through the CT mess but don't get hit with traffic.

However, i was in Stamford last night going back home, it was a nightmare! From Stamford-Norwalk-Bridgeport, CRAZY! i don't know how people deal with this type of traffic on a daily basis.

About 17 miles, 30-35 mins to work and 35-40 mins to get back home in average.

18 miles. Can take around 30-50mins to get to work, getting home takes 40-60mins...all depending on traffic conditions. Bay Area traffic has been getting worse these past few years, wished I lived closer to work.

When I was in texas I woudl commute 40 miles each way (many times through traffic) in my 6MT E92 M3. Never really had any complaints other than the 1.5 hour commute on a shitty traffic day. Then I moved into the city and my commute went from 40 miles to 7 lol.

Now that I'm in the bay area i drive 1.7 miles each way to and from work lol.

i live 3.9 miles away from work. I had an option to buy a bigger house 15 miles away but considering I work 7 days a week, I chose the smaller fixer upper with more land.

Ok I have done pretty much all of it. Long 1-2 hour each way commute, work from home no commute, traffic commute, none traffic commute etc.

Right now I drive about 18 miles each way 4 days a week. Takes me 15-20min on the highway if there are no accidents. Since I don't get to work until 10am I miss all the traffic. I don't mind this commute. I actually look forward to driving the car in the morning and after work. Sometimes I'll take the long way home down A1A just for fun.

Now when I use to drive 1-2 hours in traffic each way that was unbearable! First I started carpooling with a co-worker, but after less than like a year I moved because I couldn't deal with it anymore.

Traffic is really what kills me. Rather have a longer commute without traffic than a shorter one with traffic. Even if I end up spending more time on the road with the longer one.

I like your attitude. After all of these years I started to think exactly like you if I have a nice car why should I save it and then give away later.

exactly, man. we spend way too much money getting the cars we want and I don't see the point of not driving them and just saving it for the next owner. that advice of buying a "beater" is to me the worst advice ever.....the whole point of owning a great car is to use it and enjoy it....not to buy a beater and park it!! there is no joy in that....just the sour smell of compromise!

It used to be 42+ miles one way to work through the hell that is DC Metro area traffic. I did this for about 10 years. I can say my health definitely took a toll from it due to all the stress. Now my set regular commute can be from about 40 feet to 0 feet as I have a job where I work from home. I do have to get out occasionally, to visit clients either locally or by train or plane. But what makes things a bit better is I can usually coordinate when I go to reduce the exposure to traffic. Also my employer pays for all the travel related expenses to include gas/mileage and parking. Too bad my Focus got totaled this year from a deer strike. I was making major money off of the reimbursement with that car.

35 miles, about 27 on the highway and 8 on side streets.
Without traffic or construction, I can make it in under 40 minutes.
But in the Chicago there's always traffic & construction.

My commute is exactly 30 miles. I live in the city and work outside the city in the burbs. So traffic is always in the opposite direction I'm going.

~40-45 mins in the morning, 50-1.5 hrs depending on accidents going home

This exactly. My employer says we have to come in because our clients (mostly nuclear plants) can come to the office at any hour of any day. I've only been here for 3 months, but talking with people that have been here for at least 5 years say they've seen maybe 1-2 clients in the office over their tenure. They also give notice when coming in. all of our work is basically done remotely and the sites usually don't work Fridays, so I don't really see the big deal in working from home for 1 day out of the week.

4.7 miles per direction. I want to move to Orange County and find a new gig, but there are certain circumstances at my current work that prevent me from leaving LA... But if it's not resolved by Friday I'll leave regardless.
