So BMW USA press release today says the 550e production starts July 2024. What would be so different from European models that they would delay several months…just volume and supply chain issues?

Probably. Demand is much higher for plug-ins in Europe; since BMW can only produce so many cars in a given month it makes sense to try and satisfy pent-up demand in Europe first.

Does anyone know if pre-ordering is open in the US for the 550e at this point? BMW FS wants a production number in order to further extend my lease. They are not really worried about when the vehicle will arrive, they are just looking for that number.

Odd that they don’t already have reviews based on the current version available now.

I'm due my 550e soon and I've never owned a car without reading reviews first.
Really strange launch for a new vehicle! |

Most of the "cons" in the above review are goofy. I just want to comment on one of them though, which is regarding the interior: "Lacks one coherent design theme; it’s a bit of a mish-mash".
I think BMW got it right. Having driven an iX I can appreciate the g60 NOT being so one sided. It doesn't look so...plain...or...empty. |

This feels like a "low effort" review (no pictures besides stock photos, mostly things that could have been written without driving the car etc.), but it's a start. I know I'll be torn between the i5 xDrive40 and the 550e; they are almost exactly the same price here in Canada! |

The Telegraph verdict
Big and expensive, this eighth-generation 5-series is being sold as much on its software and gadgets as it is on dynamics and power units. Did it need to break the five-metre-long barrier, did it need quite so many software gimmicks, is piano black a fit-and-proper cabin material for an £80-grand car? Discuss. But while you are doing so, remember that when it comes to joining up villages, towns and cities, in all weathers, in sybaritic comfort and with astonishing body control and driver appeal, this plug-in BMW has few if any peers. Although I must admit that Herbie my Labrador would prefer the estate version, if that’s OK with you. behind paywall https://www.telegraph.co.uk/cars/bmw...lug-in-hybrid/ |

Here in Canada the 550e doesn't seem to offer an air suspension, unless I'm mistaken. |

Air suspension is only available on Hybrid and Electric (I would assume because of the weight), and as standard equipment in Europe on the 550e and as an option on the 530e.
Electric range should be the same in US than in Europe, 83 to 90 kilometers (49-56 miles) according to WLTP standards Last edited by Kelig; 02-29-2024 at 09:00 AM.. |
