Instead of renting an F80, I actually got to take delivery late Monday! In the last 48hrs I've had tons of fun - in my OWN car - driving 700+ miles through 5 countries and the "go to ED mountain passes" (Stelvio, Gothard, Furka, Grimsel etc). I'm trying to get another 300 on it tomorrow so I can get it serviced prior to going to the Ring this weekend (hit me up if any of you will be there).

It seems like the recall and fix is moving in the right direction. I met an M2 owner on Monday who was also able to take his car. Hopefully BMW makes good with everyone else asap.

When was the booked deliver date for your car and on what date you realized it's on hold? More info needed.

Hi Dude, Spoke to the Dealer today, it was Manufactured late May/early June. I should have taken delivery this weekend (at the very least, the car should have been at the dealership).

It was confirmed that the car is having the diff. replaced and that it was a 4.5hr procedure (which means they are definitely taking out the drivetrain etc). I am concerned about long term issues or reoccurring issues as a result of the replacement. I'm very much undecided.

I have been given a tentative update of two weeks until the parts will be available for the installation. I will continue to monitor the progress. Have a great day!

Pretty bummed about that. If parts get there in 2 weeks, then installation, and finally transportation to PCD, sounds like a high possibility that it'll pass 10 weeks since dropping the car off in Munich...

I had felt the same way here. This being my first m3 and I was pretty excited taking delivery three weeks ago but now I am sort bummed out that I have to wait another three weeks and accept a car that already had a defect. The fact that my car is sitting at the vpc port waiting for the parts va the actual m mechanics fixing g the issue back in Germany. At least the dealership isn't fixing it though...I am also debating if I should just reorder th car in the winter because summer is over already and I won't be able to enjoy the car as much until next year anyway.

IMO (I am affected too ), the prescribed fix is not a big deal. They are simply swapping out a defective module (your differential aka "pumpkin") for a new one. They will disconnect your light-weight CF propeller shaft going into the front of the differential and disconnect the two driveshafts exiting on either side of the differential toward the rear wheels. They will remove the defective differential, replace it with a new one and reverse the above process. I can understand wanting a perfect specimen, but in reality you will get a perfect specimen when they are done with the change out.

Considering how much more you guys down there pay for them, I get it, but it's a relatively minor thing, other than the repair wait.

It'd be interesting to have information on number of people cancelling their order because of this, my guess, not many.

Today marks 21 days since mine arrived at port (44 days, 8 hours, and 25 minutes since dropping it off in Munich). Key word in what my CA sent was "tentative"... Who knows where he got that or how accurate it'll be, I won't be holding my breath. Only positive in all this is that I'll be 3 months into my lease with only 500 miles so far, lol.

Spoke to Genius today. While he still couldn't see a day for my car specifically, he did say parts were starting to come in, and mid-August was the earliest delivery date he had seen for similarly affected cars.

I guess that's something.

Was told my parts are on order, lots of flexibility and a desire to make things right. Wants to talk about making me whole after repairs are done, which I've come to accept.

No specific ETA - but signaled that it would be less than a month from now.

A few reasons why I don't accept this at face value (no offence to OP):

1. If not an immediate problem, why rush out replacement differentials and withhold cars?
2. If not a safety/more serious issue why withhold cars?
3. My car has covered 210 miles and the differential is making intermittent unpleasant noises so is now off the road.

I think we can probably all read between the lines. What IS annoying is that the differential for my car is on back order with NO delivery date. 10 days on the road and now off for how long?? 7 days so far...

Hey guys, so I had an 8/1ish delivery for my m2. Of course I got hit with the stop sale. I was able to call around and it's said that each VDC is getting 6 set of parts a week (iirc) and they're prioritizing the customer sold cars first and pushing them out asap.

I talked to a very nice lady at my local distribution center who told me my car was shipped recently and should be at my dealership in the next day or so.

So it seems your car is only going to be delayed by a few weeks, month tops. It just depends if your distribution center has a bunch of stop sale cars sold to customers.

Why the rush? Do you want them to take even longer to replace them than they are? That's why the rush.

If not a safety issue then why keep customers waiting for out of stock diffs? Let them drive their cars. Suggest that this process is being run for BMW's convenience. Also I suggest it is not as straightforward an issue as is being suggested. As another poster suggests, how do they know that a part fitted within the last 2 months will be problematic in 12k miles time or thereabouts?

How many people are already having issues like myself?

Just sharing thoughts. I think it more than acceptable that I should be disappointed with this process with what is in fact my first ever purchase of a new BMW. (Have bought new from Porsche, Aston, Mercedes etc previously).

I do now have a loan car. Given the noises coming from the diff the last thing I want is something to fail and then have to wait for a new drive shaft or any similar component that might be damaged as a result. And this last comment might shed some light on why cars are being withheld.

Some speculation of course, but a few facts too!

Thanks mate! I realise the issue is very different, but didn't BMW say this about the N54 Fuel Pump Issue? Again, I'm being a little emotional... My other concern is how many "test" kms are going to be put on the car now...

Just as a point of reference for people, my vehicle inquiry status says work order started (7/26), estimated work order completion date (8/12), estimated dealer delivery date (8/15). At port Hueneme VPC. Did ED and dropped off in Munich on 6/7.

So, looks like "work order started" simply means something like "we've assigned a differential to your car, but don't have it yet or haven't started installing it yet". But I presume this is better than having no date estimates, which I have been reading about (and I feel for you!).

Just wanted to share my experience for others in Montreal area.

- Dropped off in Frankfurt June 29
- Landed in Halifax port July 18
(Held for stop delivery)
- Released from port August 1
- Arrived at dealership today August 4

Received confirmation that replacement differential shipping from Germany August 5 and should arrive in Montreal before August 12.
