You and I are nearly the same age so I went through the transition as well. I think the biggest problem was that the switch was not complete meaning not everything went metric. The construction industry, at least here in NS, is still to this day a confusing mix of standard and metric with the municipal government just recently requiring all submissions for building permits be in metric only. They no longer accept any drawings with standard measurements on them even if metric is right alongside. This often means two sets of plans being drawn with one(metric) being submitted for permits and the other(std) being copied and distributed to all the trades. I don't have to tell you what kind of mess that can turn into.

In the UK, draught beer is sold in imperial measurements (pint and half-pint) and bottled beer is all metric - how does that work!

Same in Canada. Our speed limits are in KMH, our temp is in Celsius most stores sell produce and and meat by the lbs. but it is also measured by the 100 grams or kilograms. Lumber is sold in imperial and tape measures are imperial, building is all done in imperial. Just enough metric to screw us up.
