Oh really, that's unfortunate. I LOL'd when I first saw that movie and that scene in particular. You can remember the Zach Galifianakis character reference Rainman being a "re-TARD" while they were driving their convertible to Vegas. He said it a couple of times and the other guys have this WTF look on their face and say "you mean RE-tard".

Interesting morning. I’m having coffee and hear a big bang. I open the front door and there’s smoke everywhere and I hear loud metal scraping noises. I see my neighbors car wiped out across the street. I walk outside and look down the block and through the smoke I see a pickup truck driving away with sparks flying. His axle snapped when he hit the car and his wheel came off. How far does he think he’s going to go? Neighbors followed the scrape marks in the street and found the pickup on fire about a mile away. Happy Saturday.

Here's what will likely happen (…based on experience)….

…no eyewitnesses can put any individual in the car by way of gender/physical description, so the registered owner will be off the hook. Assuming the registered owner was behind the wheel, it is almost certain they were DUI alcohol or DUI drugs, and with the lapse in time there will be no way to validate/prove that. It is also a near certainty the vehicle will be reported "stolen".

If there were any eyewitnesses and the gender/physical description of the registered owner matches that of the driver, law enforcement will still need to rely on camera footage from someone's NEST/RING or from a traffic camera in order to place the registered owner in the vehicle.

The vehicle catching fire also complicated things. The likelihood of any relevant evidence surviving the fire is low.

This will be a mess for detectives. Thankfully no innocent persons were injured.

It was 2 year old Infiniti. They also have a brand new X3 which was in their driveway. The Infiniti is normally parked in front of their house but for some reason they parked it across the street last night. I live in one of the outer boroughs of NYC, Probably the most suburban. I imagine one of the neighbors has cameras.
