He catches flack because of how damn good Max is, but I don't think anyone else could do much better. Max has the right combination of skill and fearlessness that no other driver has right now. The older skilled drivers have more fear and aren't pushing the limits as hard, and othet younger drivers with fearlessness don't have the skill or car. I guess we'll see more next year when AT is in the RB19
Basically you're describing is that it's not the car, it's the driver..
That's quite a historically controversial statement in this topic.
There's no hate against Checo, it's usually doubt and amaizement about the difference between Max and Checo. I think in no other team the difference between drivers is this big (ok, maybe AMR with ALO and STR on occasion)

Do you have a source for that?
I can imagine that he's never driven the current AT car (or maybe even the current RB car).

Anyway, his debut was very very good for his age and level of experience.
For sure he deserves a seat in F1 as fresh blood replacing one of the old guys.

i don't make notes and save every page i read and i read a lot, but i'll see what i can find

Christian Horner says" Again, the poor guy getting dropped in a car he’s never driven, wet, dry condition

I actually think he did pretty well. And he actually overtook Max on Max’s outlap as he changed onto the intermediate tires at the end there.

To finish a race like that in itself with the lack of experience that he has, I thought in very difficult circumstances, he applied himself very well.”

yes I understand.
But but the only thing I could find was an (alledged) picture of him in an RB18.
https://www.motorsport.com/f1/news/w...ment/10511510/

I can imagine a rookie reserve driver not having driven an AT car, but not having driven any RB car...idk.
I mean he's also an RBR reserve driver.

But that also raises the question. Now that RIC is out, who's gonna drive if say, Checo gets an accident.
I mean stakes at RBR are quite a bit higher than at AT.
Obviously RIC was the main RBR reserve driver when DEV was still active, but now he's (RIC) at AT.

.
i'm not sure man, all i know is you cannot just drive the current F1 car as you wish. you can only drive them during practices, races, and tire testing.

the rules are very very strict.

if checo or max is out, i imagine either Yuki or Liam will drive the RB and there are exactly 978 drivers out there waiting for a phone call to drive the AT. from old Kubica/Jensen, green bike guy Vettel, to F2 champions

Oh there's a lot of hate against Checo out there, maybe not from you specifically, but lots of people want him out of his seat. Perez won two GP's this year. Aside from his Monaco flub because of his crash in quali, his lowest finish was 6th place. And he's still second in the driver's championship... And he has two fastest lap points for the year... he's not as consistent as Max and doesn't seem to do well setting the pace for the pack, but he's a very competent #2 driver for RB... At least he's not crashing into the back of Max...

the way i see it. does RBR want fireworks like Alonso and Hamilton in MacLaren, or do they want a stable dynamic of a dominant and a support drive that's pretty good, is old and has his fire and ambitions all but castrated.

it's not an easy decision to make.

they are not a Williams trying to squeeze every point from both drivers to make an impression on the points table. you give max a terrible car and he will get drive the team to victory, we saw that in 2021, that car was miles off Merc's pace.

Sure ! I couldn't agree more
In a bad and slow RB car ,MAX was the first driver to split the Merc dominance LEW/Bottas .

At that moment I said : This is only the beginning, and I was right .

Do we really think he'll be back though? I keep thinking he should've retired 2020.

Oh I see . You mean fighting in the front of the races like in his good old times ?

No ,never with his AT car . But if he can get Checo's seat , that's a different story ..

Hopefully he can perform better than in the McLaren , because that was really terrible !
Too bad . RIC lost it completely at McLaren and he was beaten in every race by Lando Norris .
We'll see . But let's hope for the best for him ...

Next year It's the RB20 for MAX and Checo , and AT will get the old 2023 RB19 rebuild by the 2024 FIA spec-regulations .

AT will be 'BOSS (Hugo-Boss) in 2024 , It's a new sponsor $-deal .

A great new name for the now Honda AT outfit, could be RB and Boss 1-2-3-4 mostly next season

yup. They don't want two number one drivers constantly competing. They need a driver who is happy to take the back seat to Max, but can also step up and win when something goes wrong for Max.

I am pretty surprised at the gap that's opened between Max and the entire rest of the field, Checo included. It's like something clicked for Max after Baku and he turned it up to 12.

Honestly I don't hope that . We need more tension-racing for the podium .

But one thing is for sure . The driver who wants to win has a mission ...
And that is beating MAX .
