$5800 (no homestead, just bought the house) for my 75' x 100'. Welcome to S. FL...ugh

The only reason I'd change my residence would be to gain the ability to vote in local elections so I'd at least have a voice.

Car license tabs are cheap, but I don't get mail there; if I did, I'd license my X5 in Wisconsin and save about $600 a year. Would still be peanuts compared to the property tax.

No, not hardly. I've substantially improved the land I bought and I've acquired some contiguous properties along the way, but the cabin is a modest 3100 sqft. The big tax shake-down in my case began when the Wisconsin DNR suddenly declared the previously uncharted and nameless body of water that my land adjoins to be a "recreational body of water" the year after I built my cabin (pure coincidence, of course), and thus from that point forward the 3 of us who own all the shoreline property on this private puddle were now subject to radically increased tax rates.

It's a cash extraction scheme that started back in the '80s when Chicagoland folks started buying and developing vacation properties in Wisconsin. The locals retain control; if you're not a resident you don't get to vote on anything and you'll likely be bent over and fucked good and hard when it comes to taxes, permits, building code variances, etc.

My cabin is my refuge and my workshop and my Valhalla. If you want to play, you've got to pay. I'm blessed to be able to afford it. Doesn't mean I think it's fair, though.

oh lord nope, she's not moving in any time soon. she's coming for winter break so she's crashing at mine for about a month, which is good: she said she'd like to help with any renovations (the place was owned by someone clearly 60+. i dont want carpet floors or beige walls) free labor

but nah, to answer you more seriously: she isn't moving in yet. if school is still online next year (august/sept 2021) i am thinking of offering it, though. plus, my mortgage split two ways is 1/3rds of her rent in california so both of us win

Dinonz - how big is your lot - it has to be sizeable for that price!

We just paid $5.3K USD equivalent for our property taxes, but our property is 152' x 600' lot.

That's a bridge I'll cross when it's time. Monday is our 4 months; def lots more time before I'd be comfortable popping the question.

past 2 days its been stressful and expensive lol
after 60mile trip, arrived at the house with temp of 47 degrees.
made service call, tried to start up boiler manually and i did.
During middle of storm the boiler tech showed up and replaced dirty
oil filter, perform few test to make sure no other errors.
Today, chimney inspection was done and bad news again.
i had to replace chimney liner, it was corroded and deteriorated.
$$$$$$ floating away lol

I just don't feel it. I had to put on Christmas music in the office today. I've been holding off, they started asking me around Thanksgiving. I think I'm going to slit my throat with a blunt object if I have to listen to this the rest of the week. It's ripping my heart out. I love Christmas, I love Christmas shopping and giving the perfect gifts. Not this year. I haven't bought one gift. The nieces and nephews are getting cash. I have a wreath up on my front door and a small little Charlie Brown Christmas tree. That's about the best I can do.

Sorry to hear - I think this Christmas is going to be tough for a lot of people, even those who haven't gone through what you have this year, just due to the lockdowns and lack of family gathering. Perhaps in a few weeks you'll be able to mentally separate this year from the next and things will improve...hopefully.

They are saying they are going to lock down Ontario as of Christmas eve to prevent family gatherings. I think that sucks. 2020 has been rough on lots of people and they could all use the family event to brighten their life temporarily and then lock us down after Christmas.

On a related note, I dislike politicians.

This will be the first year in the 20+ I've known my wife that her family won't be over making tamales at the house. I don't care for tamales, but miss the interactions. Our 3rd date lasted about 36 hours, as we made 110 dozen to support her sons' football team that year.

We struggled out Thursday night and bought the kids some gifts. One store. Friday I went to a second and got my dad, his wife, and my wife some warm clothing (WE LIVE IN CALIFORNIA, IT GETS COLD!!!)

I go out every evening just before dusk to turn on the lights outside. It's a struggle.

Yeah, this whole year is one giant "BAH-HUMBUG." Last year I did a rollicking Thanksgiving for 19 people. This year...three. It'll be the same 3 for Christmas Eve and just the GF and I on Christmas Day though we'll do a big family video conference call in the afternoon. I just want this year to be over.
