I hope that piece of shit rots in hell! This is EXACTLY why police need to spin the suspects cars out during chases. The chance that someone else will die is a lot lower. I know it seems as though calling off a chase is a good thing, but in reality the criminal is still going to speed and run.

God Bless the inocent victim and his family and friends. My heart goes out to them.

I watched and posted about this when I got home from the bar last night. It was actually the first thing in my head when I woke up this morning. It's freaking me out.

What I'm really upset about is that the news even showed this. Now if the victim survived it would have been (some-what) reasonable to show that he/she survived. I'm tired of the media showing things like this. Just shows how sick of a society we've become.

Again my heart goes out to the victim and those who loved and knew him/her.

DPS calls head-on crash intentional
Katie McDevitt, Tribune

Richard D. Schwartz tried to escape police years ago and was hauled off to jail. He tried again later, and landed in prison. So on Wednesday — with police on his tail after a Tempe bank robbery — the 25-year-old ex-con made a choice:

He would end the chase. He would end his life.

Schwartz turned the wheel of his speeding gray Nissan left and veered into oncoming traffic. He slammed head-on into a white Toyota, willingly taking his own life, but also that of 24-year-old Alexander S. Ahmad of Scottsdale.

“It appears from new information that the suspect intended to kill himself,” said Jack Lane, chief of the Arizona Department of Public Safety’s Highway Patrol Division at a news conference Thursday.

Officials declined to say how they knew the high-speed collision on the Salt River Pima-Maricopa Indian Community was intentional, but said investigators have evidence confirming it. Lane would not say if a suicide note was found or if the suspect made cell phone calls during the pursuit.

Also, Lane declined to say if police knew the man was suicidal before the pursuit began.

The chase started about 1:50 p.m. outside a Tempe bank and continued through a number of East Valley cities, reaching speeds of 90 mph. Schwartz exited Loop 101 at McKellips and struck the other car while heading east.

Schwartz, who went by Dustin, his middle name, was a suspect in Wednesday’s robbery and possibly four others in Chandler, Mesa and Tempe, officials said.

He served more than eight months in prison in 2003 and two years before he was placed on probation following a guilty plea to drunken driving with unlawful flight from a law enforcement vehicle. On New Year’s Day 2003, he was arrested and charged again with unlawful flight.

During this case, Schwartz’s mother, Lisa Schwartz, wrote to the trial judge, saying her son had lived a hard life. He was molested as a child, suffered from depression and had lost a brother and uncle to suicide, according to court records of her letter.

Schwartz also wrote to the judge, saying he had changed, had a young child and was engaged.

The last few years of Schwartz’s life were in stark contrast to the life of the man he killed.

Ahmad, who worked at a Scottsdale restaurant and nightclub, participated in fundraising for a cause he was passionate about.

Ahmad and his twin sister, Sara, were part of a group honored in 2002 by President Bush and Laura Bush for raising $12,005 to aid war-torn Afghanistan, according to a 2002 Tribune article. Ahmad’s father fled the country in 1973 when the Russians invaded. Both siblings met and shook hands with the president and first lady and posed for a picture.

Nearly a dozen comments from friends expressing condolences over his death were posted late Thursday on the personal page of his MySpace Web site.

“I have so many great memories of one all the times we spent together and will always have them in my heart,” read a posting on the site

The crash that killed Ahmad is still under investigation by DPS, which is also conducting an administrative investigation to ensure the pursuit violated no department policies. Lane said initial evidence shows DPS followed all its policies.

How do they deem one an expert? Apparently we're all experts as we easily determined the head-on collision was intentional.

that's horrible and disturbing. RIP to the driver of the white car. Hope there was no suffering.

Confused as to why the driver of the white car didn't even make an attempt to get out of the way..

Shock, fear, split-second situation, looking down at the radio...?
What are you suggesting, anyway? I can't believe someone would come in here and raise question as to the action or inaction of the innocent driver.

He should have just driven into that bulldozer or picked some other object to commit suicide with, not one with a driver. What a wimp.

^+1 There is no question this guy used an innocent in this diabolically selfish act.
