To be honest I think 10% is probably a reasonable figure. As much as it pains me to say this (because it kills me to see the middle class overextend themselves and thus mitigate any possibility of achieving financial freedom) I can conceivably see someone making $100k or $120k buckling down and dropping $1000 on a lower end luxury watch as a one time thing.

$5000 watches are reserved for the ~$500k/year range, which also seems reasonable to me.

And so on and so forth.

10% is a good number, imho.
I think you can spend more like 50% on a one time investment on a nice timepiece that youre going to wear your whole life. I make far less than 500k and I wear a $5k watch and I didn't overextend myself to buy it.

It's all relative. I think it's crazy that people blow money eating out twice a day and wast their money on small things and intangible things. I save and invest so I can have nice things if I want them and still live debt free.

This is one of the dumber threads I've ever seen here, some trust fund baby that can't even afford an M-car asking us if we think certain watches are too opulent...and then telling us he ISN'T EVEN IN THE MARKET for a watch.

0/10 would read again.

Buy the watch that you like, if you can afford it and not extend beyond your means

You'd have to be in serious debt if you cannot afford to spend 10% of your monthly income on a piece of jewellery.

I wanted it, so I bought it. No one knows or has ever asked how much it is. Guess how much of my income it was? None of your damned business lol.

Only poor people ask how much a watch is on your wrist. They'll have the same reaction if you say $500 or $5,000.

I got one of those cheap automatic watches (think invicta). I only wear a watch when I feel like it so that's about 4-5 times a month. Thing works, tells the time.

I've even got compliments on it lol. I guess you have to be a watch person to want a really nice one. I can respect the idea of nice watches just don't see myself getting one anytime soon.

As someone that doesn't care much about watches I used to never open these threads. Now that I understand what is being discussed I am much more interested. Nothing better than having random people tell me what level of watch I should buy based on my income. I used to get this information at the mall.

I don't think % to income is as important as what you're comfortable paying without it impacting priorities

This thread is fucking stupid. There is no other way to put it.

Maybe I should start a thread asking how much % of monthly income can be spent on a computer, cell phone, clothing, blah blah blah.

This topic is now about bubble gum.

What percentage of your income should spend on a pack of bubble gum?

A) < .00000001%
B) .00000001-.00000005%
C) .00000005 - .00000010%
D) > .00000010%

IMHO you should be making a gazillion dollars per year if you want to buy a pack of Big Red for 99 cents. I can conceivably see people making a trillion dollars per year MAYYBE overextending themselves and buying a pack of wrigley's for 50 cents but that's stretching it.

Stupidest thing I've heard this week! You wear a watch because you like watches and that model. Not to impress someone else or show off your "wealth".
I picked up my first Rolex when was in the military and was getting paid $4,000/month. It took me quite some time to save for it, but it was so worth it. It was a pre-owned GMT-II with black steel bezel and I paid $3,800 for it.

But really, there is no percentage of salary. You buy what you want to own, and if you are smart, you can even make money on it down the road.
