Well: I just dug this out http://www.e90post.com/forums/showthread.php?t=774601 to see how things are evolving.
One question though, if the UKL platform is also xDrive compatible, and BMW will be offering 3 cylinder engines, that push out 160-230hp, then wouldn't there be room to mount the 3 cyl longitudinally, and just take drive to the rear wheels as the xDrive would. |

Not unexpected given past comments from SCOTT. Those wanting a sub-3 4-door will still have the 2GC. We already new the next generation 1 Series would be all FWD (so no more RWD hatchbacks either ).
As for the 2, previously I've said no way they will move to UKL next generation, but I admit the case for that happening is also building. The FWD Z1 is rumored to be on the way, and that certainly could have been a candidate for the 2 platform instead. The problem is, if BMW keeps growing the size of the cars each generation, do we eventually have all FWD cars? If not, when and how does it all stop? |

No, it'll come in AWD as well and that's what counts for me here in the Alps. For anybody who's asking why is BMW doing this, the answer is packaging. So it makes sense for smaller cars as the new 1 sedan and hatch. The transversally mounted engine leaves more space to be used for the cabin. That's why the side view of the previous and current 1 series hatch (longitudinally mounted engine) is so different to other hatches and that's why the new A-class MB (transversally mounted engine) is so cute (to many, not to me).

Because they're competing with everyone else. If Mercedes and Audi are offering little FWD cars, BMW probably doesn't feel like they can win over enough customers with a RWD model. So they'll offer FWD & AWD as well. As enthusiast we want RWD, but it's the masses that companies make the majority of their money from. The FWD cars that Mercedes and Audi make aren't for enthusiast either so this is BMW positioning themselves to compete for overall sales. Hopefully BMW has plans in place for some new RWD cars to please enthusiast.

The lack of spare tire is a big issue for me here in Canada. This is not Europe with a car service at every corner... Since I bought the bimmer, I was afraid to go out with my OUTdoor vehicle. If I get a flat I am screwed, maybe in the hands of an indiferent towing idiot that will scratch all my car. However, rather than buying a FWD BMW, i will probably buy a Honda. It is cheaper, more reliable and ... it will be compromise free and worry free because it has a spare. |

I too hope your logic is wrong. I've been waiting for the 2er as it's more in line, size wize, with what I'd want as a replacement for my E92.
This news, along with everything I've felt and read about the 4er just makes me think I really need to take good care of my E92 to make it last as long as is possible. I fear BMW may not again make a car that I really will like just as much and that is in a similar price range.

2 series will have RWD, as Scott said: Coupe, Cabrio, GC, etc.
1 series wil be FWD. I'm curious who's on target for these models? Only new BMW customers? I don't think we'll see many actual BMW customers to make the switch to a FWD car as they already like a RWD BMW. |
