I did the DNC list and the calls did drop down. You still get them from political fund raisers, police and fireman associations, not-for-profits, and anyone you have requested info from or are a current customer of. The freaking newspaper was calling every week asking if I wanted to go to everyday delivery. The last time I said "no, but I will be expecting your call at the same time next week in case I change my mind". They haven't called back since.

So true, you are right.
I don't think he's an idiot though. He's just biased based on his own experience and chose to make a disrespectful post saying that it was "the dumbest thing I've ever heard". Now that's a pretty obnoxious statement if you ask me. It was late at night however so I'll give him the benefit of the doubt.

The fact remains that the DNC list is great. It curtails about 90% or more of the current telemarketing calls I get. It is NOT a silver bullet however. All one needs to do to avoid prosecution by the FCC/FTC is move their operations out of the country. India has quite a few call centers that run telemarking operations out of it.

Also, in the very near future telemarketers will be increasinly using VOIP systems to hide their true identities and call you. Since technically VOIP is data packets carrying wav bites, there is very little FCC/FTC regulations to stop them.

So with all that said, I like to have fun with the telemarketers who do get through to me. I'm not an ass or anything to them - well I try not to be - but I do like to mind fuck them.

Any phone call I get on the home phone or a number I don't know on my cell phone, I answer it with this:

"The office of the Justice department...judge jackie speaking"

and they hang up!

Absolutely right! The other loop hole in the DNC is that companies with whom you are currently doing business with can call you for any reason. Sprint (Embarq) for instance, loves to call me and ask if I would like to upgrade my service. These and the Police Benevolent Fund people are just about the only calls I get. Every once in a while a solicitor will get through. My favorite thing to do (and I know this will piss off Cadillac Johnson) is wait until they are done with their long winded, scripted spiel and tell them I wasn't paying attention and ask them to repeat themselves. After about the third or fourth re-reading, they are fuming!

This type of advertising (including spam and junk mail) are VERY invasive of my privacy. When I want to buy something, I usually do my own research, to verify that I am getting the best price for a quality product. I have never once bought anything from a telemarketer/spammer/junk mailer. I really do go out of my way to NOT do business with companies that involve themselves with this practice.

If you want to send me a coupon in the mail, great! If you send me a fake check worth up to $9,548.99 and a chance to spend 10 seconds in the dollar wind chamber, I can promise you I will NEVER step foot in your establishment.

It is just too bad that there are enough stupid people in this world, who actually think they can cash in that $9,548.99 check in at Big Bob's Used Cars, or that the telemarketer really has called only you to participate in this last chance opportunity to get the deal of a lifetime, that it warrants businesses to participate in this invasive, annoying form of advertising.

By the way, Cadillac Johnson, when I watch TV, listen to the radio, or read a magazine, I know going into it that I will see advertising because advertisers help offset the costs of those services. I have the choice of flipping the channel/station/page. However, telemarketers do not offset the cost of my phone bill and I am left with choice of playing mind games or telling them to SHUT THE FUCK UP!
