How about a pre 2001 Volvo S70? I'm on my 3rd Volvo as a beater. I buy the wagons with about 80,000 - 90,000 miles on them and put another 100,000 on them.
Very very reliable. Make sure the timing belt was changed at 70,000 (there will be a sticker on the engine). Leather, heated seats, tons of features, great car, quick, economical (25mpg if you baby it). I currently have a 1998 V70. Bought it at 91,000 now have 148,000. No problems whatsoever. Paid $7000. Payment is $146. Cheap reliable, classy transport. They redesigned in 2001 under Ford. No experience with that car other than we had an S60 for 4 years (same thing) but only put 30K miles on it. If you shop carefully, you may be able to pick up a t5 on an 'R'.

Hmmm...interesting...never would have thought about a Volvo.
How about a 1988-1992 Mercedes Benz E Class diesel? Those things were built like tanks...before Mercedes started doing their cost cutting... |
