I am both relieved(at buying e92) and also disappointed at G37(because I liked the look of the concept). In all fairness, it sounds like the performance has improved all around. Remember, they don't have to BEAT the 3-series performance(although they are trying)...just get close enough to grab part of the market with its value. I think they focused too hard on trying to up the performance that they forgot the simple strength of their old coupe...the looks.

Is it just me or does the G37 look like a Solara?

Plus, while I like Edmunds as a price resource, I think I will reserve judgment until I read the Car & Driver or Road and Track review.

Consensus

Gentlemen, we have consensus..... A BMW fan board doesn't like the new Infiniti

I just noticed the G37 lower bumper rips off the E46 M3 (except the brake ducts). Look at the difference between the concept car (and the older G35 coupe) and the new G37 coupe.......

Looks bigger and plainer. The old one was sportier.

Those are some big brakes! I think the HP is disappointing because it is a high revver, based on that number it's doubtful the torque could be too much more than 300, if that. Probably lacks direct injection. Looks, I'd have to see in person, seems nice, but the problem is if you want a car to drive like a German car, seems like you have to get just that, and put up with this ? mark for total reliability and cost-of-ownership. But that's just what you have to do if you want the road manners of the BMW. The 3 is the king, period, in its segment.

Demand has been equal to or greater than supply, and that's been the case for many years. Can the mighty BMW fall? Possibly. Germans missed the boat, they invented MP3 technology and get like 71 million / yr. in licensing fees, which is nothing compared to what's being made with the technology. Swiss didn't see the benefit of quartz watches (me? I'm ok with my watch running 10 sec. fast every day it's a diver's thing). So maybe BMW should stop worrying so much about road feel and manners, and start focusing on navigation systems, remove the direct injection, put a 9-spd paddle shifted slushbox in, and design the car to last 10 yrs. without maintenance or repairs. But Infiniti already has a stronghold in that arena, so maybe on the other hand BMW should just keep doing what they're doing!

I, too, am a little disappointed and I agree it's the rear of the car where things go wrong. For some reason, the coupe reminds me a little of a Scion tC. I actually like how the new G35 sedan looks, BTW.

But the 14" brakes and 19" wheels (with sport package) and other specs look pretty impressive. I bet it drives nice.

A few interesting notes from the pics and articles:

- It's not clear how the BMW was equipped for Nissan's test. Did it have the wider wheels/tires from the sport package, or the stock setup? I have 17" 225 snow tires (Dunlop M3s) and the difference is dramatic, even considering that they're snow compounds. Runflats vs. non-runflats would also make a difference.

- The BMW overheating and limping home looks really bad. Most owners will never face this, but BMW should ensure that owners can go to the track without issues. It's getting warmer and DEs will become more popular soon.

- The comments about the Infiniti leaving the BMW at the top end is funny given the many comments about how rough that engine is at upper RPMs. Fast, perhaps, but it's likely going to be an unpleasant experience for your ears, hands, and seat of your pants. V6s are inherently flawed and no manufacturer seems to be able to make them smooth at high RPMs.

- A five-speed automatic transmission? I'd expect that on something from GM, Ford, or Chrysler, or on something that costs less than $25k, but that's absurd on a car in this class. Putting paddle shifters on an obviously low-tech transmission isn't going to make it better, and it's no match for the excellent Steptronic in the 335i. The low figure for the torque may also be due to the need to accomodate this sad choice of a transmission.

- The car has some interesting angles, just like the current G35 coupe, but overall it doesn't hang together very well. The side profile in particular puts me in the mind of a Scion tC, which isn't bad, just not right for a car in this class. The headlights continue their march up the front fenders, so I guess by 2012 or so they'll touch the A-pillars, or perhaps the whole front fender assembly will be headlight. The rear lights are similarly stretching across the back, and will soon touch. Not quite as bad as the Bangle models from BMW, but not nearly as elegant and sexy as it could have been. I think the older G35 coupe looks better, and I agree with others who like the new G35 sedan better than this coupe.

- The interior leaves me cold, lacking any sense of warmth, as if designed by someone who had only heard about German car interiors from the 90's without actually seeing them. I'm sure it will have lots of standard and optional gizmos, most of which won't do much to actually improve the driver or passenger experience. BMW isn't innocent of this either, but they do seem to be at least trying to make things unobtrusive (excepting iDrive).

As with the previous G35, the G37 is a viable alternative if price is an issue, or you just can't get enough of the Infiniti brand, but most folks would be happier in a 335i coupe.

I think I'm going to break from the bias on this board and say that I may like it, but I'll have to see one in person and drive it. Don't forget how alot of us on this board like to say that photos don't do the E90 justice, especially it's rear end, so just as I said with the '08 C-Class, I'm going to wait for the real thing and see for myself.

Well I guess that about does it...

So I have been reading this forum (and two others) for about a month now, gathering information for my next vehicle (the lease on my 04 WRX is up in May). I have narrowed my choice down to three cars. The 335i, IS350 and was waiting for news on the G37. After test driving the IS350, it was out...I still find it hard to believe that they don't offer a manual transmission, and the pseudo-SMG paddle shifters left much to be desired as I waited for the transmission to change for what seemed like 1.5 seconds, a feat which should be measured in milliseconds! I test drove the 335i a couple of weeks ago and was pleasantly surprised, I have always found the interiors of BMW's to be quite austere given that I have always owned Japanese. After seeing these pictures of the G37, I can honestly say that my decision has been made. Wow. I was expecting so much more from Infinity ( I even test drove the new sedan a month ago and thought it was a very good value for the price), I am really disappointed with this effort on the coupe. I think the 1st gen is much better looking

So...it's down to my local BMW dealership on the week-end to order an Alpine White w/ saddle brown and alum interior 335i. Hopefully it gets here by end of May.

The more I look at the pictures, the more it reminds me of a bloated Accord Coupe Concept at the recent auto show. Yuck!

FWIW, I used to frequent G35Driver.com when I had my modded '04 Infiniti G35 Sedan; I just checked that Forum just to see what the folks over there are saying about the '08 G37 as well...99% hate it and at this point (just from the pics and preliminary review) are not motivated to trade in their current G35's! Most feel like the new 3.7L V6 would've been better put to use had Infiniti dropped it into the current style G35 Coupe.

Yuck! I prefer the current body style. And what's with this pulling the headlights further and further back over the hood. Before you know it, it's gonna go all the way to the windshield.

Reminds me of a Pontiac G6 - not a good effort on Infiniti's part. Maybe they're going after the Lexus buyer, who wants all the attention put on the inside and doesn't care a lick about the outsides.

You know when the E90 came out, a lot of people hated the look as well. (Personally I still am not fond of the E90, and still think the E46 looks much much better but thats my own opinion.) What I'm saying is even though i don't think the G37 is as clearly beautiful as when we first saw the G35, its not bad looking and will probably still sell very well. I think the look will grow on people, like the 7 series BM has for me.

same. Alot of people don't care much about much.. with sports cars or good cars, just as long as it is fast in a straight line and has features. so... G35 sold A LOT! and has loyal owners and fans... (some g35 coupe owners are now 335i coupe owners )

Anyway, like all new designs in anything. It takes time for it to grow on ya. Also, to me looked good in pics, but the pics didn't do it justice. Some cars or some other beautiful things just look best in person.
