Just because the kid could easily be over powered doesn't mean that officers must put themselves in any sort of danger unnecessarily. What would have been excessive force would have been them tackling him to the floor. They neutralized him without physical contact.

an 8 year old kid is not hard to subdue... you might get a bruise or two.. perhaps a cut.. but there really wouldn't be any real danger. Wtf do you expect as a cop??? |

Ok, sure a bruise, maybe a couple cuts, maybe he'd trip and break an ankle... Instead now only his eyes burned for 30 minutes...

Grab kids arm and drag him away kicking and screaming. Are there any injuries? NO! 8 year old kid is probably 50-60lbs. Are you really telling me that no adult or cops in BULLETPROOF VESTS, for that matter, could not come up to him and grab his arm? And I am yet to hear an answer to my question: How many of you have kids?

solefald,
i've been pepper sprayed before, actually maced during training - its wears off. Better than being tased, or being tackled which could lead to potential injuries. don't care if he was 8 years old, he deserved it and i agree w/ others that the officer acted accordingly.

That attitude is precisely what's wrong with the world today. Good luck - hope everyone who thinks the officer overreacted gets a kid like that of their own...or perhaps, better yet, gets a kid like that after them and then "subdues" them and hopefully then gets sued by the parents for not having special training to deal with their little brat. Seriously - this bugs me. I wish the officer did a little more, really teach the kid a lesson. What is lacking in society is corporal punishment nowadays - and we're all reaping the benefits of that by having little (and now grown up) idiots running around, knowing nobody can do anything to them, even if they are misbehaving. |

pepper spray = developed as a NON LETHAL means to subdue people to comply.
kid acting up, threatened others, had a make-shift weapon = cop used a non lethal method to subdue him. in the end...no one got hurt and the kid was left with a irritated face for a while. ![]()

Kid got exactly what he deserved. Cop physically restraining the kid and risk getting stabbed in the eye? - forget about it.
Mom's reaction to file a complaint against the police action? Well that says A LOT regading how this kid turned out the way he did. Mama's untouchable precious snow flake ya know |

And on another note, it doesn't matter if I have 1 kid, 10 kids or no kids, this is a case of using common sense - we got an outcome with no injury's. Perfectly handled, imo of course...and many others. but anyways, really, who cares, we are all entitled to our opinion. Last edited by NBRider88; 04-07-2011 at 07:41 PM.. |

were the cops also 4'2" 75lbs? I guess I could see that, then. I mean, he is 8 years old after all lol... but i guess it would simply look bad to just run up to the kid and slap the fat off his face (probably the best course of action).
this is from a study for the nypd: The Patrol Guide advises officers to avoid using pepper spray against persons who appear to be in frail health, young children, women believed to be pregnant, or persons with known respiratory conditions. and one can read further the studies which corroborate the above conclusion that pepper spray's effects are more deleterious to children than adults, and thus more likely to cause more long term damage. The bigger question: why is the mom defending such crappy juvenile behavior from her crappy son?
