[QUOTE=bolinp78;9071288]If you are complaining about $4.00/gallon (which, in the big picture is cheap), just wait until the oil companies have their taxes increased ten fold to make way for the new green energy revolution that is so important to everyone that doesn't have a clue about how economics work.

When the cost of extracting/refining that fuel you think is so expensive goes up astronomically, you'll be the one paying for it. But at least the tax dollars will be going to support the new energy revolution! The people in power right now have no earthly idea how to even spell energy policy, much less enact a policy with a LONG TERM FOCUS. They want to tax the big bad oil companies (while also taxing the smaller ones that cannot afford to shoulder the tax increases) so that they can prop up and accelerate their green energy. They don't have the intelligence or foresight to understand or see is that you can't just hopscotch from one energy source to the next. It's going to be years before any sort of infrastructure is in place that can support more greener forms of energy en masse. What sources of energy are you going to use while we move towards the green?

I almost stopped right when I saw that you were blaming 'greedy oil companies' but this thread just has so much potential I couldn't help myself. Drilling here is not the solution? You sound clueless. Do you also need a lesson on the ramifications of China holding a vast amount of our debt?[/QUOTE

OPEC has actually increased production (Saudia Arabia for one example) to cover any loss of production from Libya. The oil production supply chain is months long, and any immediate loss of production theoretically shouldn't be felt for quite some time.

and of course oil companies are to partially to blame as well, they aren't going to leave "money on the table" (to use an economics term) if they think external events can be used to justify a price spike. even worse than them, however, are the commodity traders and other speculators that drive up the price of oil for pretty damn tenuous reasons.

Or you could do what I did and buy a Diesel to save on fuel costs...

Then go to run a work errand this morning and get stuck behind some dumb bitch in the pasing lane driving 62 MPH while texting and swerving all over the road. Who then proceedees to swerve far enough off of the left shoulder to hit a ~36" piece of corrugated steel launching it into the air with a flight trajectory right at my windshield.

Nearly being decapitated at 8AM is kind of a shitty way to start the work week BTW.

Car has 980 miles on it.

At least I was able to evade enough that it missed the $1100.00 headlight..... but yeah so much for reducing my yearly auto expenses. Body shop says $568.00.

It is not only the price of gas you pay at the pump but the cost of everything else goes up as well. Petroleum products, groceries, etc.. It shows how many people here are still live at home and have no other bills other than their own auto gas bills.

Gimme a break!

^^He's right...

i use 650 gallons on average.... at 3 it's 2k; at 4 it's 2.6k; at 5 it's 3.25k that works out to roughly $20 difference a week from $3 to $5... no biggie.

Do we have enough oil here to substantially move the needle? Serious question - I'm not sure how much untapped reserve is out there.

Natgas would be a reasonable transition fuel if people were serious about breaking the dependency on oil. This is certainly not the case though. (And the answer to the question above would determine the impact on oil prices if we started to turn to our supply of gas instead.)
