That Porsche was awesome.
I'd agree, any Subaru preferably something with turbo power. I recently traded my WRX for a Nissan Pathfinder, the WRX was up there at least 30 times over the last couple years I had it. It was a champ, if the road was slick it would just crab walk or drive cocked at an angle. I never even put the snow tires on, although I should have. now a days the pathfinder so we can roll with 6-7 at a time. With all the weight on the back it's not to be slippery, I usually don't have to put it into 4 wheel. |

Well summer tires don't work so well in the winter. I could have the summer set on and sit in the garage. What fun would that be?
Actually P-cars do really well in the snow. AWD and lots of weight on the rear tires. |

I had a FJ Curiser w/ the manual transmission which has full time 4WD with mechanically locking center diff and rear diff. The front diff was electronically brake locked with ATRAC which was actually a very good system. It was like "spider goats" (see earlier post)....go over and up anything. Absolutely loved that vehicle. You can get a new one in your budget.

The manual transmission FJ would get about 15mpg in the city and 18 on the highway....if I was lucky. Premium gas too. She was a very thirsty truck.
The auto tranny ones actually got better mileage because you have the option of disengaging the 4WD. That said, I think the permanently engaged 4WD system offered only in the manual version is superior because it has a center differential rather than a positive lock transfer case layout of the auto. The only time you can use the 4WD in the auto transmission is if you are off-road. |

Have you looked at Nissan Xterra? Had one before the bimmer and loved it, still kicking myself for letting it go. It had a six speed manual and the off road package. Bilstein suspension from factory, fancy off road tires, locking diffs. all the good stuff. 4.0L V6 with the six speed had plenty off power to get around.
