Car, EVO and Autocar magazines are all excellent, as was the relaunched Performance Car which has now closed, Wheels Magazine from Australia is also a good read.

evo hands down. have you noticed the amount of advertising in the american mags? at least the ads in the euro mags are more interesting and auto related. haven't bought an american car mag in years. not missing it...

car and driver seems to be written for old men and I find it extremely boring to read. I actually started to hate it. I got tricked into subscribing to c&d and motor trend. I renewed my subscription to motor trend.

Top Gear mag is actually not as great as I'd like it to be. Great photography and all, but the writing isn't as in-depth as most other magazines.

I disagree. Out of all the domestic magazines, the editors at C&D seem to focus on the enjoyment and overall refinement of cars, as opposed to specific stats like acceleration/braking/lap times. It's a change of pace compared to R&T, MT and Automobile.

I like Motor Trend's layout and editors' articles though. That, and their comparisons are usually well written.

+1 EVO is easily the best magazines. Smart writers who can drive and are pretty objective when it comes to comparisons. And the photography is killer!

Top Gear is also a good magazine. Well written articles, and great evaluations.

British mags are very objective, EVO being the most. They're especially honest when it comes to talking about the "feedback" that modern steering gives, which isn't much.

I like all three, but I only buy Car and Evo regularly. Autocar is $11 an issue in the US and you just don't get enough content to justify that price every week. I also get Octane and Motor Trend Classic.

Speaking of Evo, check out their "Performance Car Buying Guide" which is currently out - nice sampler of a lot of recent buyers guides and some great cars. I also picked up Octane's Classic Car Guide recently.

Really, nobody has mentioned GRM yet? It's a must read for DIY car enthusiasts. They did a project car series on the 335i culminating in a showdown against a stock M3. Another project car was a spec e30.

In my mind, GRM + Roundel is all the car magazine I need.

As for 0-60 times, there is always a margin of error - can't speak for Automobile or Motor Trend but I know Road & Track always makes note of testing conditions such as temperature, humidity, elevation, etc. These can all have affect acceleration, and I have no reason to doubt any sub 5 sec numbers for the 335 were fudged, though there were a few that were "corrected" for atmospheric conditions. C&D's results seemed to mirror BMW's factory numbers

I reiterate that even recent issues of C&D seem much more concerned with flowery prose and interior material fappage than I care about - I prefer a no nonsense approach to how a car drives and performs. I'm not saying not to prefer C&D, just be wary of the content you are actually consuming.

I echo your sentiments about Motor Trend - I couldn't stand them 5 years ago. However I urge you to pick up a newer issue - their improvement is staggering.
So I don't understand. You would get a G35 over a 335?

Re-read what I wrote, it was 330 not 335 (it was the E46 chassis as well). If it were 2004, I would get the G35 sedan over the E46 330 sedan.

No one has mentioned it so I will.... The only US car mag you really need to read to find out about everything that is new and upcoming is... AUTOWEEK.

I also like these UK mags:

Top Gear
Classic Car

I subscribe to C&D, motor trend and autoweek because they are pretty cheap to get. They all have the same articles. I hate to get one mag and get a different one a few days later and read the same article about a mustang GT vs Camaro SS vs Challenger.

I never subscribed to a euro mag, is it worth the price?

Often times, the mags also get the same manufacturer test cars passed on from one mag to the next. At least the manufacturers can give out different colored cars.

The euro car mags that I have seen, as would be expected, give the specifications in metric measurements. Which to me is annoying.
They also use different words for hood (bonnet), trunk (boot), sedan (saloon) etc.

Subscribe to EVO; interesting articles, great columns, better photography, etc. It's all worth the extra. CAR is well written but the material isn't as interesting nor is a lot of it relevant to the industry outside of the EU and UK.

Yes! Not to mention all the illrelevent information you got to weed through. I say "illrelevent" because over half the automobiles discussed in those (European) magazines we don't get here in the U.S. Then you have to take into account the roads and climates they often test in; especially in the U.K. They’ll often rate a particular automobiles' suspension tuning horrendous where in the U.S. it’s often a different story. Also they often go without noting the difference (s) between the Euro spec versions and U.S. spec versions of the particular automobile (s) they review so you really don’t know what to think. If I were to pick a magazine to subscribe to it would probably be Car and Driver. As far as them being bias towards BMW I’m not buying it besides not long ago they crowned the Audi S4 King vs. the 335i. BMW’s are held in high regards due to their own merits; no excuses needed. My second choice would be Road and Track; I like how they have that quick reference page towards the back that shows most of the stats of the latest cars from al most all the major manufactures’. If you want to talk about "Bias" read "Motortrend" and "Edmunds"...

Hi, new around here.

EVO subscriber here, great M3 issue recently!

By the way, about that "Performance Car Buying Guide" mentioned above, can anyone tell me if it's just a collection of what's been published in the EVO magazines or is there new unpublished content? thanks

It's a collection or re-prints, like their other Magbooks.
