Patrick Bateman (American Psycho). While I like Bret Easton Ellis' original novel portrayal much better than Mary Hurron's film interpretation, the film was excellent as well and upon seeing it was actually what prompted me to read the novel, and subsequently the rest of Ellis' prose, then pretty much other "brat pack" author...but I digress
(hopefully all these sites let me hotlink) I especially find it interesting that Ellis' anthropomorphism for insecurity, over-compensationalism, and inconspicuous spending remains true today, if not more than ever (at least as far is my young perspective can recall). The same obsession with outward appearance and money has been more or less ingrained in much of my generation by pop culture (esp. TV), I can't think of one person I know (myself included) who's completely innocent of such thought processes from time to time. While I could well exceed the post limit meandering in and out of how I have come to view Patrick Bateman, I think Ellis did a great job creating a murderous psychopath who (IMO at least) is quite easy to empathize for, yet not excuse for anything, and think Christian Bale did an excellent job portraying him, much better than Leo DiCaprio would have been capable of in 1999. |

I forgot about Patrick Bateman.
"Harold, it's Bateman, Patrick Bateman. You're my lawyer so I think you should know: I've killed a lot of people. Some girls in the apartment uptown uh, some homeless people maybe 5 or 10 um an NYU girl I met in Central Park. I left her in a parking lot behind some donut shop. I killed Bethany, my old girlfriend, with a nail gun, and some man uh some old ****** with a dog last week. I killed another girl with a chainsaw, I had to, she almost got away and uh someone else there I can't remember maybe a model, but she's dead too. And Paul Allen. I killed Paul Allen with an axe in the face, his body is dissolving in a bathtub in Hell's Kitchen. I don't want to leave anything out here. I guess I've killed maybe 20 people, maybe 40. I have tapes of a lot of it, uh some of the girls have seen the tapes. I even, um... I ate some of their brains, and I tried to cook a little. Tonight I, uh, I just had to kill a LOT of people. And I'm not sure I'm gonna get away with it this time. I guess I'll uh, I mean, ah, I guess I'm a pretty uh, I mean I guess I'm a pretty sick guy. So, if you get back tomorrow, I may show up at Harry's Bar, so you know, keep your eyes open." |

Serenity/Firefly's Mal Reynolds. I love everything about this character. Honorable, courage, sarcastic, and witty.
I think the runner up may be Equilibrium's John Preston. Last edited by stimpy; 06-22-2010 at 04:23 PM.. |
