But I have to say, what gives you the right to say 'ignorance from people that say "back in my day" ' You didnt even live in those times. You have no evidence that life was worse back then. Life is more about per capita income, life expectancy and infant mortality rate. How old are you? 20? 30? Talk to a guy thats 65, hell talk to 100 guys that are 65. They will all tell you the same thing, life was better back then. That is all the data I need. Politics shmolitics... EDIT: Too late, it is officially a political shit thread.

I'm 22. Yes I'm young. Age doesn't mean you're smarter, it just means you've been around longer and experienced more, it doesn't mean you've made the correct inferences based on these experiences and no one expects it should. Welcome to why statistics were created. I've studied economic development to a great extent, and can assure you the 3 largest metrics indicating a better quality of life are per capita income increasing, life expectancy increasing, and infant mortality rate decreasing. In fact the latter two are nearly completely dependent on the first. I'm not saying that the only three things anyone should ever care about is per capita income, life expectancy, and infant mortality rate, but I guarantee the average person would like MORE money, a LONGER life, and for their baby (existing or pending) to have a BETTER probability of living...I'd say those 3 are pretty important factors. You haven't provided me any evidence that life was better "back in the day." I've given you 3 academically hypothesized and supported indicators of quality of life. You're going to interview 100 old guys. When you can provide me a significant, relevant, quantitative metric other than some 65yr old geezer becoming nostalgic about spending 10c for a pop because he can't figure out email I'll listen to you what you have to say. Glad you got a kick out of a propagandist email with an obvious agenda thinly veiled as humor. I'm glad I'm not that stupid. |

As someone born to perhaps the last generation of kids who were allowed to go out and play in their neighborhood all day, I find this funny. Those born in the 80's and 90's probably won't.

I grew up in the early 80's but in a really small town, so it was basically 10-20 years behind.... and I still don't fully see the humor there...maybe just me and BTM though :P

I was born in 1987 and got to do just that, go out and play all day in the neighborhood
What does that have to do with times being better when you could beat your kid or bring your guns to school? |

I didn't think I'd have to spell it out. In short, people weren't afraid of every little thing. Nowadays parents see that someone got kidnapped and won't let their child go out and play. Many people don't even know their neighbors, and often times no attempt is made to rectify that situation as it isn't even seen as a problem. Bringing aspirin to school will get you strip searched. The list goes on and on, but the bottom line to me is that the percentage of people that walk around afraid of every little thing has increased linearly with the speed of media and the passage of time. This explains it pretty well. |

And in this day and age most SANE people AREN'T afraid of every little thing. If you're retarded enough to let an obvious media bias influence your decisions to the degree that it's affecting the way you're raising your children, then you're an idiot, no matter what day and age said kids are being raised within
Sidenote: I'd look for something a little more credible than a stand up comedian's youtube to cite from here on out |

I'd like to see this graph and its sources, I didn't know that accurate statistics regarding the number of "people who walk around afraid of every little thing" were available. Additionally, a linear increase is significantly less telling than a geometric increase, how was this seemingly unobtainable statistic adjusted for population changes?

Well you said it explains your point and I (pretty easily mind you) recognized it as a (shitty, but aren't they all?) stand up comedian with a fucking youtube account
If you're not trying to justify yourself to anyone why bother replying? With a dumb video nonetheless? Or with an apparently made up linear graph of "people who are afraid of every little thing" vs. "the speed of media throughout time" |

It's anecdotal, and when I chose the word linear I was speaking figuratively. Perhaps I should have said "directly". I suspect you're being intentionally obtuse. You know this thread is based on anecdote more than quantifiable evidence, so stop arguing as those all of these subjects have been subjected to the scrutiny of a microscope. Asking for sources, cites, and references is utterly worthless. It'd be like me asking you for the scientific analysis of the taste of fish. You can't describe how fish tastes in scientific terms, and you can't ask someone to sum up their life's observation experiences in statistical terms either.
