How about 25K for tires on a Bugatti Veyron, or 35K to replace the clutch on the Porsche Carrera GT? Hell, how about the 1.5 million I'd spend on detailing supplies, and the man hours keeping it clean?

I've heard the carbon ceramic rotors on the Challenge Stradale cost over 10k each, and you have to replace all four of them at once.
Ferrari prices their parts so high to keep out what they call 'fringe buyers' - people who can just barely afford the car itself.

My dad's last twin turbo lambo got towed maybe 7-8 times for engine/tranny issues and the car wasn't even being driven hard. Just imagine how much that cost. A headlight on his new one cracked on the freeway from a rock and it cost 4,000 for a new one. The list goes on and on with these cars.

My client bumped into the front end of a Lambo Diablo with her little tin-car Kia Accent, messed up front bumper & headlight, cost $43,000 to repair.

thanks for the input but the question i have still is why is maintainence so high? does lambo, ferrari, etc use their OWN special oil, spark plugs, etc?
why can't one buy royal purple or other high tier oil, spark plugs from an online store, oil filter online, bring it to a very reputable shop and have it done there? same goes for all the other things like clutch etc. i understand parts like clutch, brakes, etc are expensive but maintainence still boggles my mind. is it something special they formulate and use? i mean the bmw m5/m6 is a 5l v10 and oil change is fine every 5k miles and can be done by oneself. same goes for the porsches i believe, you can do your own oil change and bring it to a reputable shop for anything else like air filter, spark plugs, etc. maybe someone can clairify this...

1) They're high performance race cars. Every piece on the car will need to be replaced/serviced sooner than a mass-produced vehicle such as the M5, etc. Oil, lubrication, etc therefore have short shelf lives and need be done every 1,500 miles or so.
2) The vehicles aren't designed for you to be able to work on. An oil change will require taking things apart. Service hours for exotics tend to be extremely high since techs want to be paid. I see many Ferraris at my independent shop because the labor rate is so much cheaper. 3) parts used are of high quality. Full syntech oils, and probably not the cheap kind, are used. I've seen syntechs cost $40/qt. Would a cheaper syntech work? Presumably, but a Lambo tech wont put it in your car and it could depreciate engine life (think using 87 octane on your 335i. Will get the job done, but poorly and cause damage over the long-term). 4) As with all race cars, sometimes things will jsut break for no reason. There's no logic to it, but you'll putter to a stop on the highway. Towing specifically to somewhere that works on the car and having them lift it in the air to even SEE what's wrong will probably have you footing out $1000+. Verdict: You can probably get away with doing things a bit cheaper than average by using an independent tech and cheaper materials, but you're risking things breaking down in the future.

i think everyone has a good point here... BUT.
dude, expensive toys don't have to make sense okay? Rich people do things for no logical reasons, so why would you assume toys build for them is any different? Exotics only serve one purpose, gets you laid... or give females the desire to sleep with you. And quit frankly, thats all you should worry about... Not the technical part of the oil change and what not. Now, if the exotic breaks down and cause you not to get laid... like that guy with the squeaking brake lambo. You return it.. cause it no longer does what it is intended to do, squeakly brakes turn chicks off. |

Exotics cost a ton to maintain because most aren't driven much. I know many people who have daily driven their ferraris (over 20k miles/year), and they are much cheaper to maintain then the ones that sit in the garage collecting dust.

which comes to point number 2...why the f#$k would you buy a car that expensive and just let it sit around?! i understand the whole 'the more you drive it, the less it's worth', but shit, even when you're not driving it, it's losing value. unless of course you have an f40 or enzo in your garage. but if you have a 'mass produced' exotic like a gallardo, drive the piss out of it and get your money's worth.
