For a fun car, I would recommend a Porshce Boxster S. It's fairly quick, handles well, and you always have the option of putting the top down when the weather is nice. From what I have heard, the Cayman handles even better than the Boxster, but the styling still hasn't grown on me.

Even if you don't like vettes, it's definitely the most bang for the buck (500hp, crazy handling) so you might just want to test drive one and see if that will change your mind. The Cayman S is a great car, but a lot of what you're paying is for the Porsche badge...it's rather underpowered for what you're paying. S200, Evo, STI are all below what your target price is, but the latter two are definitely worth a test drive because they are monsters. I personally am drooling over the new M Coupe.

what the vette lacks is precision in handling, it puts down the numbers, but it's not pretty or confidence inspiring at the edge
If power is worth more money, than certainly it's worth money to have a better balanced chassis and better handling. the handling on the cayman is friggin flawless, and that's why it's not over priced. A BMW fan should know bettter than to fixate on HP numbers. Evo, STI, S2000 may all be nice, but who wants to get out of a 3 series and then get into an econobox for a "fun car"? doesn't matter how well it handles if the interior and lack of features make it a place you don't want to spend time in. The higher end cars have similar performance and are actually nice to look at inside and out. |

Lotus EXIGE
Caterham 7 Superlight The caterham is almost as quick as the ariel atom, but easier to live with. The ariel is a beast, but perhaps fun is not the right word? The Exige defines fun. |

Since you live in salt lake, get a Jeep! get a used one to go off roading in, you could load it up and spend a total of $20,000. You live in an area with some many jeep clubs, it is really a good time, plus they are so easy to work on. you can tow it with your truck. Let me know if you need any suggestions on lift kits and other accessories.
