The ideal solution is to get an Si and put a BMW badge on it to gain the "golden standard" you mention.

I traded my 06 Fiji Si for my 335, no I wouldn't trade my 335 back for an SI but I absolutely loved it. If I had to get back in a cheaper car, the Si would be #1.

E92 M3 4.0L V8 = Fun x2
Both are high revving super fun cars.

In all seriousness the Civic Si is a great beginner car. I beat my girlfriends 325i in one lol. It was great because it didn't get you into too much trouble when you thrashed it and wanted to have fun. If I had a son I'd probably buy him something similar.
