Really? I can think of several legitimate reasons to play. Everything from the impact of the small amount of money spent on your future net worth being negligible, entertainment value or the occasional positive expected value that comes with large prizes. For instance in Canada, Super 7 and Lotto 6/49 are both positive expected value when the grand prize is around 17m. Once the prize get over that you’re stupid for not playing.

Walked to the Post Office & ran into a guy pushing a shopping cart who stopped to ask me if I knew anyone who would want to split a $800 scratcher? Thinking it was a total scam, I said I'm sure he would find someone & went to the PO. I got to thinking hey we could trot over to the liquor store with that ticket & it could be validated.
I ran to look for the guy & finally found him a couple blocks away leaving a pawn shop. I asked if he still had that ticket & he said he did. So I asked if he could meet at the liquor store in 30 minutes & I would front half for him & I would redeem the ticket (he was homeless & since the store wouldn't pay up for more than $600, the ticket needed to be sent to Sacramento to be redeemed & then they would send you a check). I went & got my front $ at the bank ('Sorry, but Sir you don't have sufficient funds!' Which I worked out). The liquor store guy confirmed the winner, I paid the guy the front $ and sent in the ticket & waited for the check. Explaining the story over the dinner table was a challenge. 'Yeah, I gave this homeless guy with a shopping cart, $400 today, so cool!' The $800 finally arrived in the mail & I got to write off $400 as a gambling debt on my 1040.

I haven't won shit. I know a family though that won something like $4-5 million (it was a while ago, don't remember the exact amount). The dad went to go buy some groceries and decided to buy a ticket for the hell of it to round up his purchase to something even. It was cool because they were just hovering above the poverty line, and it's even cooler because the dad was smart enough to invest in a large-but-not-crazy house and invest long-term and use it as a supplement to his otherwise shitty income. Both his girls went from being really cool, down to earth people to total bitches though.
