If I were the heir apparent to the Dragon Lady (Joan Claybrook - who, among other wonderful automotive masterpieces, gave us the 85 MPH speedo), I'd go after cars on a weight/hp basis - regulating out of existence anything under 20 lbs per HP. Hello 160 HP Corvette! Welcome to the world I grew up in - all of a sudden it's 1978 all over again.
Or - I'd federalize highway traffic enforcement. Every car in the US on federally funded roads would have to have an operating black box (with an RFID tag, kinda like IFF). No black box, car is impounded - mega fine to retrieve. Then the black box's primary purpose would be to monitor sudden manuvers and extra-legal speeds, prompting a credit charge charge for each violation. If you use a little imagination you can think of some really dreadful things that could be implemented (and oddly enough - most of them wouldn't be violations of our constitutional rights). So this 'bill' - which should not have passed the smell test for it's egregious structure - is nothing more than a warning of what can happen when people who 'know what's best for you' are in a position to act on their nanniness. (Can't tell that I have fairly strong libertarian bias can you? ; -) |

Sadly, I know Ms. McCarthy personally. Earlier in her life she suffered a grave tragedy in which her husband (a great guy) was killed and her son wounded by a deranged gunman on the Long Island Rail Road. She ran for Congress on an anti-gun platform and was elected. Since that time she has not accomplished a thing in Congress.
While this may be a joke, I would not put something like this past her. ![]()

i guess we should all ride bikes lol
thats the stupidest bill ive seen. but then again, you can go fast with any car. i can easily go 180 in a honda civic dx stock, all i have to do is push the gas. there is no point to band "high HP cars."

This is so funny. When I started reading it I could not believe someone was presenting a bill like this but I remember the bill to ban assault weapons. It looked like this but for guns and it passed. AK47’s were ban if they had a thumb hole stock but a pistol grip AK47 was ok. They also ban folding stocks so Manufactures of folding stocks made “two piece fixed stocks” where it would not fold. You buy a kit and it becomes a folding stock.
So I could see how lots of posters thought it was real. It just shows us that politicians are so ridiculous in there pork barrel spending and special interests people believe that some member of the House would present a bill like this. And your political choice does not matter, there all the same when it comes to stuff like this.

what's so great about the U.S. as we know it? we live in houses that are too big and too far apart, drive cars that are too big and heavy, drink water out of plastic bottles that we throw away, etc. a little lifestyle modification would be wise i think. of course the new economic reality, i.e. depression, may impose an involuntary demise to the current epidemic of profligacy.
