Y'know when I read the OP's desciption of the event, it reminded me of that occasional driver that does indeed leave too much space between his car and the car in front of him. We've all seen those types. Now, the OP describes that there was only two car lengths between himself and the car in front... but if traffic wasn't moving, there's really no reason to leave a bunch of space there, anyway, as it is a sure bet to piss off other drivers. Further, when the traffic started to move, the OP posted that he waited a few seconds to start to move. Whoa! A few seconds will create an even bigger gap! No doubt, at this point, he's got so much space that the guy behind him is totally pissed off and decides to race around the OP to fill the gap, and not be stuck behind a guy that simply won't keep up with traffic in a timely manner for his own personal self-centered reasons. I make no excuse for road rage, but drivers that won't keep up with the flow of traffic are usually self-centered control freaks, and use traffic as a mechanism to be in control of others. I've seen drivers in the left lane going slower than drivers in the right lanes, and they make no attempt to move over and let other "faster" drivers go by. They end up with a loooong string of cars behind them because they think that they have the right to decide for everyone how fast they should go. On the other hand, I have passed cars on occassion with a couple of women that are yakking away completely oblivious to the rest of the world... talk about being self-centered! Sometimes it's intentionally selfish, and sometimes it's just self-centered stupidity.

I hear ya TagMan...those people drive me nuts as well. Trust me, I'm not just sitting. The space I leave is reasonable, usually just past where I can see the rear tires of the car in front of me. With this distance, you can leave the car in one gear and move forward at a CONSTANT speed without rubbernecking. Check out a mac truck next time you're in traffic, they'll do the same thing yet they move forward at the same rate. If everyone would do it, traffic would move forward constantly, saving fuel, brakes and clutches. When you sit in stop and go traffic for nearly 3 hours each day, it's the only saving grace. of course there is a fine line, too much space where multiple cars continue to fill the gap only slows everyone behind the gapper.
Trust me, and fellow NOVA members can back me up, this area is plagued with challenged drivers. Every day I see at least two fender benders because of tailgaters running up each others asses. Create a small, reasonable buffer so you can stop slowly to avoid the guy behind your ramming up your tailpipe. The "close driver" next to me this morning almost rear ended a lexus because she was too busy putting on makeup. The lexus left enough room and inched forward to avoid it. If someone starts tailgating, and I can't move over to let them pass, the first thing I'll do in increase following distance...anticipate and protect yourself first. Some of these methods were taught in a motorcycle safety course I took years ago. They have saved my ass countless times. Bikes (and 1ers) can stop faster than most cars. |

I agree w/ tagman, that alone is enough to make me nuts. I also have zero patients for people that drive on the shoulder and try to cut in in front of me, no way my friend, no way. Road rage is a mental issue( I have it at times) I see red and have no clue as to what I'm doing until its over, its scary. Once I actually got into a fight on the street b/c this drunk dude drove into a McDonalds parkinglot, drove on the sidewalk and then cut me off by inches, I honked, he got out, I got out my wife got out, and he pushed her, I went beserk, he ran and jumped in his car, we followed him home(which turned out to be my wifes parents apartment building) and called the 50, the arrested him on the spot. We had so many witnesses looking from the apartment buildings and McD's. BUT, I know I have an issue. Funny thing is I'm the nicest guy in the world, never in fights, almost a pu$$y, but put me behind the wheel, and I have zero tolerance. I know its bad, and I do try to stop myself, but usually I realize I should stop after I have started. Just being honest here. I know I'm and A$$.
