Hickory Nut Gap Rd. in Banner Elk, NC. Not a high speed road, mostly 2nd gear with touches of third but it has no traffic. Note though that after one pass in only one direction, my brakes were faded enough that I wouldn't have gone back until they had cooled off...

My wife and I took a drive from Pittsburgh to the Shenandoah valley last month. Very enjoyable driving -- especially if you avoid the Pa. Turnpike and take State Rte 31. Lots of twists, lots of hills, lots of scenic vistas.
I'd also recommend the Pittsburgh to Philadelphia drive, too, but only if you avoid the amateurs on the Turnpike as much as possible. Take the back roads (State Rte 31, U.S. 30) where possible. An enjoyable drive, if you aren't in a hurry. And I definitely endorse Skyline Drive, as well. |

Have you done the switchbacks behind Mt. Baldy which end in Glendora? Drove it every weekend when I was a much younger man.

This is Jacob's Ladder, about 1.5 hour's drive from my place. Great for rallying, but don't want to damage my 135's paintwork.

Well, after a huge ordeal, I finally got some decent video of the roads I posted earlier. The problem is....I can't get them off the damn camera and into a format I can upload.
Hopefully I'll have it figured out by tmrw night. |

Pacific Coast Highway, especially once you get a hundred feet or so off the water, up near Big Sur for instance. Head northbound for the driving experience, head southbound to scare the hell out of your passenger. Oh, and be prepared to get behind RV's in both directions that do not give a damn that they are going 30mph all the time.
Angeles Crest Highway in the Angeles Crest Forest. Beautiful drive, lots of twisties. You can find youtube videos shot here. Some people drive this dangerously fast. Colorado State Route 72, Coal Creek Canyon. Pretty well maintained pavement, lots of canyon twisties. US 40, Berthoud Pass, Colorado. Very new pavement, lots of switchbacks. Reminds me of Stelvio, albeit much tamer. See map here.

Road to Hana
I can't wait to put my car on the ferry over to the island of Maui and go on the "Road to Hana!" I once took a rental on it...but I can't wait to drive the one there...50-mile Hana Highway that features 600 hairpin turns and 54 one-lane bridges.
The hardest part of driving it is deciding whether to pay attention to the joys of driving it or observing some of the best scenery in the 50 states. http://maps.google.com/maps?f=d&sadd...7&ie=UTF8&z=11 |

First Video is up. It doesn't look very good. Youtube's compression changes the aspect ratio (it's shot in 16:9) and screws it up pretty good.
I've got another that will be up later, or tomorrow night. |

These are some amazing routes!
Just as a FYI, Mountain Blasting is now open to the public with a new UI and additional features. It would be awesome if these routes were posted. Its ridiculously easy to create a route. Also please don't hesitate to send some feedback. We'd love to hear from you. http://www.mountainblasting.com |
