I get the direction of travel and the reasons, but for me performance cars are dying with the change to EV, I don't care about how fast it will go as ICE M cars are already too fast if you want to retain some respect for others and your licence so that's a pointless exercise.
Noise, drama and emotion in terms of the feel and sound of the car are essence of M for me and peaked with the e92 M3 IMO, even though I've also had F and G chassis M cars, they lost that Mness as they chased AWD, 0-60 times and got really heavy in the process. Imagine a silent 800hp 2.2 tonne G80 M3 and you can probably imagine this car.

I got $20 and a 6-Pack saying it will be the fastest BMW to hit 100kph (...or 60mph) over all BMWs ever built to date. I'm thinking the performance will be on par with the Taycan 4S,...or even Taycan GT. Also, if they give the damn thing some 300+ miles of range,...in Winter",...it will sell to those considering a high performance EV. Case in point, as much as I luv the Taycan GT,...I wouldn't be able to afford one until it's about 4-5 years old and has North of some 30k miles on it. It's the 800V architecture for me...

Can you imagine a gas engine that could go past 200mph with just one gear? I mean that would be like launching a 200mph ICE car in 5th/6th gear and expecting it to do a 1.9 sec 0-60 time at the same time. It makes you realize how far superior an EV motor is to a ICE powerplant. Many times more efficient, instant response, and much lighter and reliable. More importantly you can have instant control of the output for traction control and torque vectoring. If it weren't for the extremely heavy batteries, it would be no contest. The fact that EVs are already performing this well on the street and on the Nurburgring with this huge weight penalty is telling. The future is just going to get better.

I happen to want both. My i4 M50 as a daily driver and the M2 I have on order for weekend and track events. But if I only own one it's my i4 M50.

18% in a 10 mile drive. That equates to a full charge of 60 miles range. You should throw it away. That equates to 3-4% on my i4 M50, even with the sticky tires.

The M50 is not getting discounted like that and if you want an M50 with 20" wheels you are paying MSRP and waiting to get it.

I would argue neither of them are M cars, but they are solely on the M car sheet to make shareholders happy. Regarding the video at hand, they had to overlay some alien saucer/jetsons noise over the parts where the modified F87 drive around a track to make it not absolutely dull.

I personally like the sound, just as I like (love) the sound the Audi/Porsche EVs make, but it isn’t an absolute must to make the car fun to drive and experience. Jnless of course you are incredibly closed-minded. |

If they pipe in artificial sounds they must think it is, in its base form, lackluster and soulless.
A troglodyte would not consider it to have soul with piped in engine sounds, just the opposite, amplifying the soullessness.

To be fair they started doing this with their gas cars at least since 2003 with the M54 powered Z4’s. There’s a part called the “sound generator” that was a tube from the intake elbow to a hole in the firewall. There was a diaphragm of some sort inside that I think filtered/altered the noise somewhat. Sounded great IMO. I actually liked it so much that I tried to retrofit one onto my Z4M, which didnt come with one from the factory for some reason.

Same for me, I leased an RS e-tron GT, fun as heck for what it is for around town duties and even easy trips (as long as you understand to not always rely on Electrify America where everyone and their mom is eating up their freebie juice). I'd lease the hell out of an electric M car to replace it, so I'm hoping that interest isn't high so I can score a great lease rate
