On a spirited drive with other M cars, I got 3.3mi/kWh. That was with no A/C. High speed freeway driving drops down to 2.9 mi/kWh.

I am begining to realize I have a heavy foot in this i5 M60. Already got first speeding tix recently.
On the side, I drive a 911 GTS and the M60 is so much faster.

Yes, but your efficiency will improve with time. Commuting to work with traffic, and maybe having some fun on weekends. I use the boost paddle on rare occasions.

I drove 13 miles out to a remote area to try launch control. Warm out 76 degrees. I got 3.9mi/kWh. Then I did launch control and drove back getting 3.0mi/kWh.

The A/C was on.

Mine is starting to improve now the better weather is coming and this morning I had it on charge but didn’t make it to 100%, in any case it was pretty decent at 273 miles with 95%SOC.

Sorry, I’ve been traveling this week and just getting back to this. Probably the other replies have addressed this - my original point is significant drops in efficiency are much more likely due to driving faster/heavier acceleration than just A/C on or off.

I would then charge up again in Baker on my return journey from Vegas to L.A. I realize that is probably being very conservative on the range, but as LVBMW points out, the charging situation in Vegas isn't great. If I get really good distance on the initial charge from home, I may consider waiting until Vegas. For example, my hotel (Mandalay Bay) has level 2 chargers, but only a few of them. Other options include the outlet mall south or Caesar's Forum shops. I'll be sure to report back after the trip.
Here is my halfway report after having driven from L.A. to Vegas. I averaged 3.9 mi./kWh and my total range would have reached ~ 320 miles if I had continued driving without a charge. It was extremely hot (~ 105 degrees) so I ran the AC for most of the journey, but I was in Efficiency mode. I chose to play it safe and charged to 80% at Electrify America in Baker, CA. when the percentage charge was showing 45% remaining. It took 16 minutes to charge from 45% to 80% and of course cost nothing because of the free 30-minute charging we get from BMW. BTW, although I hit the Baker charging center at a peak time (4 p.m. on a Friday), 3 of the 12 CCS chargers were available, all with peak charging power of 350 kW.

This morning, I decided to try the Electrify America Las Vegas South Premium Outlets. There are only 6 CCS chargers there and 2 were available when I arrived at 6:15 a.m. This time I started with 48% available charge and charged for 28 minutes which got me to 92% and an indicated range of 331 miles. Should be more than enough for the return to L.A. tomorrow.

So my commute experiment doesn’t look as good for my i5. I had to start over with a 100% charge last Saturday. Began with a 336mi estimated range this time. After a week of daily commuting (~36mi round trip) and a few small trips I’ve traveled 219 miles. I’m now at 16% left with 53 mi of estimated range left. If I pushed to the end I’d guess I would clock only 260mi or so. : (

Here are my details: eDrive40 with 20” wheels, Efficient mode and B mode most of the time, highway assist used for about 70% of stop and go (Los Angeles) highway driving…rarely got over 70 mph. A/C was set to 69 auto, ventilated seats on auto, stereo bumping, outside temp around 75-90 (but garaged during day so it wasn’t too hot when leaving work each evening). Looks like my efficiency was 3.3 kw/mi. In other modes I’ve been seeing 3.7kw/mi.

The range estimate on the dash is quite variable and will shift around a lot. I think that tracking efficiency levels is probably the best way to go as the number represents measured quantities - distance travelled and current used. I’d be interested if you are able to get better efficiency without highway assist - for instance when I’ve used it here in the Bay Area, it (obviously) maintains the same speed traveling up hills as on the flats which may be fine, but can challenge the efficiency numbers a bit more.

Also *really* bad stop and go traffic doesn’t help either as you drain power to keep the car stationary with AC, entertainment etc. Probably not a huge drain but I’ll be it could knock 0.2 mi/kWh off your efficiency or so.

Thanks. Thants exactly what I want to gauge, what the initial estimates translates to in reality. In my F10 a full tank will say 400+ miles but it was soon apparent that 280 mi was what I should expect.

I’m definitely going to keep experimenting. Ultimately it was a week of driving on single charge, so that’s more than enough for my daily needs.

Here is an efficiency number I may never see again. LOL I started the trip meter near the top of a long sloping hill and took this photo shortly after it leveled off at the bottom (as you can see, only a 2.6 mile trip). Sigh, if only we could CONSTANTLY drive downhill.

Actually, my most common regular trip is about 10 miles each way (from home to the tennis courts and back) for a total of 20 miles. Earlier this week, using D driving mode with minimum regeneration I got 3.1 mi/kWh one way and 4.4 mi/kWh the other. That's a round-trip average of about 3.75 mi/kWh. With a useable battery capacity of 81.2 kWh that's a maximum range of about 305 miles. I suspect it will even be better for longer trips that don't have so many hills in them. I should be able to test that this fall when I drive out to the Palm Springs area from the Los Angeles area and back.

I think I'm getting better efficiency by using the D mode with minimum regeneration than I was when I was using B mode. I'll probably do another comparison next week with both modes and compare. By the way, temperatures have been in the 90s Fahrenheit here during these trips.

It was a lot of fun. I drove to the starting point in efficient mode and got 3.7mile per kWh, since I knew the rest of the day would be spirited driving. Most of those legs to various points of interest, I got anywhere from 2.7 to 3.0

This week, I did a comparison of driving in B mode and D mode again (with minimum regen). Temps were in the 80s F on both days, and each day I drove my typical 20 mile round trip from home to the tennis courts and back (took the same route each time).

For both trips I got the same efficiency: 4.0 mi/kWh. Extrapolated out that's about 325 miles on a full charge. I'm happy with that.

OK - I’m throwing this down as a challenge to my fellow M60’rs - anyone got a better number for July?

Impressive. I too have not found a difference in B or D efficiency! I use B on surface streets and D on the freeway.

Driving in Efficiency does give a wee more range.

Very well done! You even beat my single-motor eDrive40 in July.
