The last BMW wagon in the US was the F31. BMW stopped after that because it didn't sell well. It didn't sell well because BMWNA did not market it. I had an F31 and everyone I met, even in BMWCCA, thought I had imported it. Nobody knew it was for sale in the US.

But BMWNA never accepts or learns their mistakes, they always blame it on the customer. Like how they canceled Euro Delivery because "customers didn't buy it" when the reality was BMWNA policies made dealers refuse to sell it.

What I'm more curious about is, will it still get hate and people claim G31 was the last good 5 Series Touring? To me, all of them are good, F11 being my favorite, I have my hopes for this one, don't let us down, BMW. We're counting on you.

Watch as the last part ages like rotten milk. *cough cough* XM *cough cough*

Interestingly seems Audi is bringing even more wagons to the US. Photos of the s5/rs5(what used to be s4/rs4) avants being tested in Colorado. Hopefully this means a change in direction to the US not getting wagons by the German brands.

I had two! Reasons why it failed are multiple. Financing was never as good as the sedan, higher base spec (in canada anyways), dealers very unwilling to order them so there where few on the lots, no 340i version...an on and on...

I am agreeing with you, BMW NA just doesn't want to sell wagons.

US consumers have proven time and time again that they greatly prefer SUVs over station wagons. Thats why they’re not brought in. Manufacturers would gladly bring them in if the general public actually bought them.

That would make sense but all reporting and rumoring has been that it will only be the M5 trim, if any at all.

Again, I think it’s about not eating into X3/X5 market share.

I'm not sure why it would be any different for the 5 series/G99 M5 Touring. I would be encouraged that the M5 would be made available if the series cars make it over.

I'll take that bet! It has been confirmed by reliable sources it will come to the US. As i said to another member it was also on the BMW USA IG page in June. No reason to tease a vehicle that isn't coming here.

BMWUSA posted the M5 Touring teaser on Instagram a while back. That's all the confirmation that I need.

Yep! They blame it on the customers but they only have themselves to blame.

I think alot have to do with import taxes Bmw make much more money on their us built suv than imported wagon. I guess a G21 built in Mexico would probably be much more competitive.

I think this is the answer. Let’s say a nicely equipped 540ix is going to be in the low $80k range. That’s just adding $10k to the price of the 530ix. Make it a touring and maybe that’s up to $84k. Just guessing. Well I can build an X5 40ix with the same level of equipment for $80k. BMW margin is much higher in the X model they don’t have to import.

I’d buy the touring 540ix over the X5. Other car enthusiasts might do the same. But way more people that just need the space and practicality of the wagon will just buy the X5, especially if it’s a few grand less.

So if you’re BMW, it’s pretty simple. Offer the higher margin product and don’t water down your market share there with a model that less people will purchase.

I still think they should offer it as an option for individual customer orders. I think they’d sell enough to make up whatever sunk costs there are to being able to put it on the menu. This is my understanding of how Merc offers the E class wagon. But I get why they don’t posture it as something dealers should order speculatively or BMWNA should pour marketing dollars into.

If BMW brings this in as a Estate version of the X5 xDrive40i I'm ready to write the check now. If its the "mild" Hybrid version I can swallow hard and buy it but if they go all green grift X5 xDrive50e version then I'm tapping out.

BMW would need the regular 5-series Touring here as well to justify bringing the M5 Touring.
Not so for the BMW. The G99 is internally confirmed for the U.S. BMW is bringing it because so many high end customers have asked for a wagon. The margin on M5's is high, so they can actually afford to bring the M5 touring more than they can the 5 series touring. If they sell really well, maybe BMW will consider more wagons (maybe).

Mercedes has shown there is a market for high performance wagons here over and over. The AMG E-series wagon has sold here successfully for a while. The average AMG E-series wagon owner has EIGHT other cars. The demographic is pretty clear. High margin wagons sell better in the U.S. than the mass ones. Totally different in Europe.
