I live in Seattle where it is overcast with rain 10 months out of the year. I have never opened the sunroof on my vehicle, but I am getting the panoramic roof to let in more light. It’s always grey, dark, and wet. It’s the same reason why skylights are popular here. I’m not worried about the heat. Maybe I won’t need the seat heaters on constantly.

I can not see the point in glass roof without opening. I want fresh air while driving. I’m pretty sure that this has something with aerodynamics and CO2 emissions in creazy Europe. That’s why we don’t have 530i and 540i models anymore. They making us fools as I see.

It’s for light.

My last several vehicles have all had glass roofs, it makes the vehicle feel more airy. I don’t think I would get one without it anymore. Then again I’ve also been driving purely electric (aside from rentals) for quite some time now.

Tesla’s coating is garbage, their overheat protection, while a really nice feature (it keeps the car cool on a hot day so you are not entering a furnace), was actually designed because their parts kept failing from the heat.

My model 3 and S both had trouble with the glass, but we got it very lightly tinted which fixed it.
Our Lucid Air and Taycan Turbo have neither had issues with the glass.

I agree but that is not reason to not have opening option. I don’t want to drive in greenhouse car, I’m not a plant. I like driving with roof and side windows open and some genious from BMW think I’m a plant appareny.

I am in the middle of building a new 540i and will order it as soon as the 2025 options and price list come out. I was last told either late this month or early July. I keep going back and fortha bout the roof because my current Mercedes has it. It gets abominably hot in the summer, and condensation in the winter. I am ordering US Specs for Overseas deployed Civil Service, so I either get the opening moonroof as Standard, or the glass roof as a $600 option. The Pano glass looks cool, but I am thinking the opening moonroof is the way to go. Since I am ordering it in Oxide Grey I am hoping the lighter color will keep it cooler.

I actually like the fixed pano roof. Adds a lot of light and openness to the interior and I haven’t seen an increase in interior temperature, especially now that it’s almost summer. If I need some ventilation, I just open one of the windows. Plus, it’s one less thing that could potentially fail down the line.

I chose the normal moonroof for my car in southern California where it easily gets into the 90s in the summer. I like the idea of the pano but like someone else wrote, it's largely for the rear passengers, or if you want more light in the cabin. For me, the potential heat it may bring in decided it. I also didn't want an entire roof made of glass.

I just keep my shade open all the time to let light in, and tinted it to keep heat out and it's enough for me. Sometimes I crack it open for some fresh air but only in Spring and Fall when the weather is not too hot. If I was in a place that didn't get that hot, or was often cloudy (like Seattle), I'd probably have gone with the pano roof.

The new 5 I looked at in a showroom in the UK had the blind for the fixed roof the wrong way around, so you could not have it open over the driver but closed over the back seats. The salesman told me that was intentional. Idiots.

I don’t get it. Why glass roof without opening part. It is nightmare to drive in summer (6 months a year in whole Europe).

It’s still 64 where I am at. We get about 2 weeks in August when it’s above 80. I haven’t noticed any heat from it at all, even with the sun shining. I’m pretty sure the sunshade would keep out the heat. Back when I lived in Florida, about 15 years ago. I kept my sun roof closed and the shade closed otherwise the heat was unbearable. You needed the A/C at full blast and didn’t want any warm air coming in from outside. I can’t even see a use case for a sun roof.

That's kind of a dumb design. If you are in the car yourself and in the front seat, you can't partially open it to enjoy the light. Youhave to either open all the way or not. That's what turned me off the pano roof. I am ordering the regular sunroof. with Oxide Grey it should help keep the interior cooler. In my MB. there is a cross bar and both front and rear blinds open rolling to the center.

After reading everyone's comments, across several threads, I think I'm going to go with the panoramic roof. It's kind of odd you have to retract it the entire way to get light in the front cabin, but it's all good. I really wish it had ambient lighting at this price point.

For me, I think the biggest factor was that I was disappointed with how the standard sunroof looked from the outside. I wish they would have considered an 'out and over' design like Audi does with the A5/S5 Sportback, rather than just a rectangular 'hole' in the roof. The design aesthetic just seems cleaner, and it would have opened entirely, too.

The entire roofline looks like my '09 Volkswagen CC I sold about 5 years ago when I moved to Spain. Except that one did not slide, it only tilted.

* If you like to drive with your Sunroof open, do NOT get the Sky Lounge (402) option and/or do NOT get the Executive Package (ZPX), which will include the Sky Lounge (402)
- The Sky Lounge (402) in the 5 series is just a fixed piece of glass that does NOT open/ventilate and does NOT have any LED lights in it, and in my opinion, is just useless/pointless.
NOTE: You do get a sunshade that can be opened/closed to allow or block out light from the sun, but the glass itself is not operable!

I only mention this because the term "Sky Lounge" can be a bit confusing and misleading - for example:
- The Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof in the X7 will have LED lights and can be opened/closed.
- The Panoramic Sky Lounge LED Roof in the i7 will have LED lights, but it CANNOT be opened/closed and remains in a fixed position

I hope that makes sense? I'm not sure which model year 5 you are trying to get and so down below is a screenshot of the Sky Lounge option in the pricing guides (incl. MY24 and MY25) - just for additional referencing!

I can’t understand what is the reason not to have opening and tilting possibility. Is it because of CO2 emissions or something else but fixed glass is bigger enemy of CO2 because air condition must work much more.

They have UV protection. I have worked in modern glass office buildings and they use the same glass. It was never hot to the touch and that was in Florida. I have lived in Florida for many years and cracked the sunroof open when the vehicle was parked or cracked a window when I didn’t have a sunroof. The results were the same. When driving, I always kept it closed and covered to keep out the sun. If I still lived there, I would opt for no sunroof with any vehicle, as they don’t help with cooling. It just exposes you to sun. My husband’s Lightning has two panels that open to create a sky lounge effect with about 3 inches of roof between the two for structural rigidity. All glass that opened would be impossible as there isn’t enough space to retract the panel. Just a tilt open would be prone to leaks.

UV is not the biggest problem but infrared light. It heats insterior much quicker, glass is not so hot but interior is. Anyhow I would never buy car with glass panel on the roof. Once upon a time I laughed to Nissan Qashqai and I was think who would buy this piece of sh** with glass on top but…BUT!

To each his own. I would never own a traditional sunroof again, either. They let in unfiltered sunlight and your car gets rain inside when you leave them open for ventilation.
