Everything is on the internet:

- Work laptop with video-conferencing and VPN connectivity.
- Multiple personal laptops with simultaneous video chats especially during the lock-down. Sometimes school sessions too.
- Streaming services.
- IP phone.
- IP TV.

At work, I used to have a 1.7 mile point-to-point link set up to a remote facility using off-the-shelf wifi hardware and two directional yagi antennas. Had full bandwidth for years in the winter, and about 80% in the summer when leaves on trees were blocking some of the signal.

Back about 15 years ago (before smartphones and 3G/4G/5G cellular hotspots), I used to poach the wifi from a distant house from the middle of our local airport's field using the Pringles can antenna to post sports car club event results from the timing/scoring trailer.

On the original topic, I actually pay for Spectrum cable modem service. We also bought our South Carolina retirement lot last summer mostly because there is gig fiber at the curb waiting for whenever we decide to build. That whole area had gig fiber installed via some rural data grant by a small local phone company. Not quite Google Fiber cheap, but it is available.....

Our uni wifi guys rigged up a line-of-sight gizmo to get wifi out to an observatory in the middle of a campus field. Was a pretty stable setup.

I got a bundle thru At&t, internet 50mbs and Uverse TV. About 165 a month that's with a 30 dollar discount promo too.

I think the internet stand-alone is 38 a month, since it's a package deal.

Still expensive overall, but works fine with many devices connected. No lag issues ever.

We cut the cord so could have up to 4 TV's streaming in 4K. Everyone has a laptop, iPad and iPhone. Also, I don't like to wait on anything lol.

Well it is Shared...

Daughter on Zoom for School
GF on Zoom for work
Me on Zoom for work
+
Home automation devices - Apple TV's for streaming - NAS device

I don't have Cable or Satellite, so all entertainment is streamed

I definitely could use more on the Upload speed - I still get Zoom messages when using video (Internet is unstable)

seems like Europe has an easier time getting the synchronous speeds though

What do you mean by that? Why would Europe be different? Curious.

Your service is what I used to have with Xfinity aka Hybrid Fiber-Coax (HFC). It's not a true fiber service per se. Fiber with the likes of what AT&T or Google offer nowadays is the real deal meaning similar up and down rates or "symmetric". That's what was frustrating with Xfinity. The upload speeds are slow in comparison.

1 gig Google Fiber for $70/mo. Way more than we need, but it's all they offer and they're just as expensive/cheap as everyone else offering less.

I have seen this on other forums and Reddit - they seem to be always quoting 600/600 - 1000/1000

one asked me why my Upload was $hit in a post.....
because I have 1200/35

Wow some crazy prices people are paying to the cartels - oops Bell and Rogers.

I have the Bell Fibe 1.5 GB down and 940 MB up package and I pay $84.47 monthly.

Why do I need 1.5 GB?
- Work from home and constantly on WebEx or Teams calls (laptop)
- Wife works from home (goes between her desktop and laptop)
- Daughter is a PC gamer and when not gaming streaming stuff on her PC
- Daughter also using Chromebook for school when classes are virtual
- 3 iPads, 3 iPhones
- 5 Connected TVs in the house and at any time 2 could be streaming (Amazon, Netflix, Disney+, Apple TV, Crave TV etc.)
- Bell Fibe TV uses the connection
- roughly 30 other ‘connected’ devices in the house for home automation

Okay, but I'm still confused about the Europe comment.

The reason why your upload speed is $hit is because it's not symmetrical (fiber). When you say "they" on other forums you mean people in Europe? You too could be getting 600/600 or 1000/1000 if you have access to actual fiber Internet service. I got lucky because AT&T laid down a fiber network in my neighborhood a couple of years ago, but prior to that, I was stuck with Xfinity. I mean it was still generally good service and stable, but just not the same. The other biggest reason I jumped off that POS plan with Xfinity was because they treat their customers like $hit. They actually told me I'd need to sign up for a 2 year contract in order to even be eligible for a discount even though I had been a customer for more than 10 years. F that.

Comcast is a true dinosaur in that respect and will one day become extinct. I'm sure there are plenty of cord cutters like me out there that will jump as soon as they have a viable option. Their business model is just too ass backwards.

yes - I meant posters that reside in Europe - seems like there are more options for synchronous there

I know I have asynchronous - I deal with it for the most part

In FL Comcast / Xfinity 1GB with their gateway is $134/mo.

In NC, AT&T 1 GB with their gateway is $40.

Neither get anywhere near 1GB over WiFi (more like 300-400 Mbps) but both come pretty close to GB with a wired connection. There are no savings to go slower, especially in NC where it is a special deal tied to my mobile service until I no longer have AT&T for mobile or they decide to fuck me over and take it away, whichever happens first.
