Typically we spend around 300+ for the week. I admit, we cheat...my wife gets a deal for cars from her company! LOL

Yeah, I too hope the car is there when you arrive! Lol.
Actually just looked at Avis and the Camary was a bit less if I "paid now" or bit more if I paid when I picked up the car but not a huge difference...

Edit: Hertz was significantly more expensive, as in twice what Avis or Budget are charging.

I'm glad my gf is from Maui, when we visit we just take one of her parents' cars.

Depending on how you "vacation" in Hawaii, you can get away without needing a car for the most part. I stopped getting rental cars in Hawaii when it started costing more for hotel parking than the cost of the car. Plenty of transportation options in Hawaii other than a rental car, at least for most days; then maybe a car for one or two days out of a week if you want to get away from the crowds. Nearly every "activity" we do, the tour companies will come right to your hotel and get you and drop you back off afterwards. If you book a remote location for your lodging, it certainly would be a different story.

It also depends on WHERE in Hawaii you are vacationing. If you're in Waikiki and Oahu in general you can probably get away without a rental car. If you're on the big island, a car is a must.
