I'm bummed Honda killed the MT in the Accord. I drove a 2.0 sport and it was fun.

6MT M2 and 6MT Tacoma Off-road. I find that driving stick keeps me more alert and engaged with driving--traffic is less aggravating and I feel like I'm less likely zone out.
I know that at some point I'll end up with an auto (some family car or an EV), but until then, trying to keep it all manual. |

I assume it is similar for you. There are probably 2 or 3 reasons why you are thinking of this purchase. 1. To have a kick ass all engaging sports car to enjoy driving - Manual option is better. 2. To put a lot of money in a car that you can enjoy, but expect to minimally depreciate or even appreciate as an investment - Manual options is Waaaaay better here. You're total cost of ownership will be way lower on the manual R8 thanks to resale. 3. To get chicks. - Manual option here too. 99% of chicks don't know the difference between a 2012 and a 2017, the V10 noise will give them goosebumps, and they'll love watching your guns as you row through the gears. With manuals going away, grabbing one of the last great ones now is the right thing to do. Not all my cars have to be manuals, but the one that are allocated to driving pleasure definitely do. I'd also recommend picking up a beater, for ordinary use. Mileage kills depreciation on these cars more than time. |

2 points you make really struck home for me 1. if you like manuals then a manual will only enhance the experience of any car, so why wouldn't I want the best experience possible in my most expensive car? 2. depreciation, the manual (which I will enjoy more) will actually ultimately cost me less close thread |

I currently own 4 automatic-transmission BMWs. All have been my wife's daily-drivers over the past 30-years though she has had sticks, too, including her first '73 2002 which we still have. But the bulk of the BMWs we currently own are clutch manuals—something like 15. (If you include motorcycles, make that 20.)

Yes. My G37 S Coupe is a 6 speed, my old Galant WAS an automatic but I did a 5 speed swap and it just transformed the car! I am going to always try to keep a manual trans in my garage

I have 3 cars, 2 trucks and a tractor.
One car and the tractor are manuals I get enough manual action, my age is also a factor.

Nice. M21 here as well ('72 Firebird).
I'm done having a manual as a daily...just too lazy and can't be bothered any more. Automatics have come a really long way though; there was a time when they sucked the joy out of the entire driving experience, but new tech has helped fix that to a truly unprecedented degree IMO. I love the different drive modes that completely alter transmission behavior. Just a few years ago, if I were to experience the savagery of my M340i in Sport + vs how benign Comfort mode is blindfolded, I'd swear I was in 2 completely different cars.

Here's how I'd answer this question:
No, not all my cars are manual. My Tundra, which is my daily is of course automatic, but my 3 BMW M's are all manuals. I'm not super interested in non-manual M's, unless I maybe replaced the Tundra with an F97. If it's a fun/weekend car, then it HAS to be 3 pedals for me. So in your scenario OP, the R8 would very much have to be a manual. Personally, I don't care if the automatics/dual clutches are faster, I just don't get as much pleasure driving them. I also think as cars become faster and faster, they become almost impossible to enjoy properly on the streets. Having a manual adds that layer that makes street driving more fun IMO. Unfortunately, we all know the trend. This is why new cars just don't interest me. Don't get me started on all these 6-7 figure super/hyper cars that come out on a monthly basis, I think they're so irrelevant.

I've owned 17 cars in the last 20 years, all manuals. I rarely post online on the many versus threads. It's simply a non-starter for me. Pending injury or regulation, I can't see myself ever getting automatic. Without hyperbole, I'd rather own a manual corolla than a C8.

Every car I’ve owned myself has been manual. Manual Honda Accord, manual Honda Civic coupe, and manual 128i. Only automatic was my dad’s old Mercedes W124 300E that I got to drive in high school with 270,000 miles on it.
Currently just rocking the Civic as my only car right now, but on the look out for the next weekend car, which will 100% be a manual. |

I'm 38 years old and have never owned anything that can shift gears on its own. Everyone likes different things, for me, its rowing through the gears along with rev matching (and sometimes double clutching) my way back down.
That's the right choice for me, and i'm going to keep making it until I no longer have the option. We spend a notable percentage of our time on this earth operating an vehicle. That time can either be wasted or enjoyed, but either way we aren't getting it back when this is all over. For me, a manual brings that time more in the direction of enjoyment, no matter what type of driving i'm doing. |

Dude, get the 6 speed. Let's be frank here, you're going to have a major case of FOMO if you get an automatic R8. DCTs are cool, my wife's GTI has one. I love how they sound when you upshift full throttle or downshift quickly. But unless you're chasing precious seconds on a race track, get something that you can enjoy the actual drive in.

I first learned to drive with a manual car, that was back in 1990. I turned 16 in 1992 and my first car and all since have been a manual. If I can help it, I’ll go into the ground having never owned an automatic.

Every car I've owned since I was 16-years-old have had manual transmissions, and only two of those weren't rear-wheel-drive (Mitsubishi Eclipse GSX and Honda CIVIC SI). 12 cars in all (including my current NB Spec Miata). My wife owned an additional 3 rear-wheel-drive manual transmission cars over the years too, before she started driving all-wheel-drive minivans and SUVs instead. She still drives my cars though. I really can't envision myself driving and enjoying anything other than manual transmission cars, unless something catastrophic happens to my left foot.

I have 6 cars and ALL 6 are manual. With that being said after putting 1,300 combined miles on a DCT M2 and M3, I have absolutely no problem with dual clutch transmission setups that are manual with computer controlled clutches. I want an R8 myself and at first was looking at 1st gen manuals too but, after looking at how much more car you can get for $20k more in a newer one, I’ve dropped the idea of an older conventional manual R8.
Side note. I saw the death of BMW manuals when I posted my disappointment in new M5’s switching to full automatic vs their previous DCT’s and ALL owners disagreed with me and said it was better for it. They took it personally that I was attacking how good the M5 was. I wasn’t. I was attacking BMW’s decision to save money and stop DCT development and yet still raise prices for M cars and that it would trickle down to M3/M4 models and I was right! Try buying a G80 Competition in manual OR DCT! I paid more money (and when I worked for BMW I told customers the same) for an M car because of 4 things: engine/transmission/suspension/brakes. Now that transmissions are conventional autos—my money will not go to new M cars anymore. For instance, I’ll end up with a PDK equipped Macan GTS as my first truck as much as I like the X3M, I want performance technology in ALL parts of my drivetrain when I spend premium dollars. Sorry for venting. |

Another thing. There is a difference between a great Dual Clutch set up and a conventional auto. After living with them for some time, I now think of the Dual Clutch as a manual. NEVER will I think of a conventional auto as a manual.
