I tested a Model S back in 2013.

Impressive for a lot of reasons but the interior was not one of them. Loose fitting panels. I had on polarized sunglasses and while viewing the screen was fine, the gauges had that distortion you get looking through polarized lenses.

Haven't been in any Elonicle since but I'm curious to check this refresh out.

I know I can google this but up until now are they still sourcing the stalks etc from was it Mercedes? (I'm not poo-pooing that - I'm sure it's a major bonus to utilize options like that bringing a car to market not to mention a ground up concept like the Model S.)

Yep, the Model S and X featured stalks and window switchgear from the last generation (late 2000's, early 2010's) MB models. Since the Model 3/Y they have developed their own switchgear though. Daimler use to have a 10% stake in Tesla, likely explaining the switchgear.

It is interesting to me that from the pictures, the purpose of the cut off steering wheel has got to be the provide the driver a clear view of the display (speedometer, etc.). Presumably that is because Tesla thinks it is important to be able to clearly see the display.

Yet in the Model3,there is no display to see. Seems to make no sense to me. Either it is important and there should be a display in the Model3 (or a HUD) or it is not that important and there should be a regular steering wheel in the S.

No one's mentioned the <1.99s to 60 yet. Any real world verification? Sorta takes all the air out of the roadster and its claimed 1.9s sprint that we've been waiting endlessly for.

Apparently thats with rollout subtracted according to Tesla's website. Still impressive, but like anything Elon says, its a wait and see case.

Indeed. The butterfly steering wheel has been previewed to collect marketing points only. Will not make it to production.

I also don't see how the steering wheel would work, today or in the future unless the steering ratio is extremely tight, with this the car becomes difficult to drive. Try keeping your hands at 3 and 9 o'clock and make a tight turn.

Exactly, the steering wheel ratio must be insanely tight for this to work. Personally, like others have said, i don't see how this passes safety regulation in case of an emergency and "autopilot" fails.

In case of emergency? Autopilot can in no way shape or form... autopilot the vehicle under tons of situations. ESPECIALLY in lower speed, tight turn situations. Plus even taking a giant leap and assuming full self driving will actually work by the time this is out (no way in hell). It's still a $10k addon so if you don't get it do you get a regular steering wheel?

I guess we shall see, however I remember when they first showed the model 3 people, including myself, said there was no way that would end up being the final product... but it was and honestly... I'm totally use to it and don't give it a second thought anymore.

My biggest concern is doing away with the gear selector and letting the car "predict" what gear you actually want. Not sure how well that's going to work and I'm curious where on the screen the selector will be. Hopefully it will be available at all times from the main screen.

The buttons aren't on the screen, they're on the console. From the Electrek article linked by stein_325i above:

Tesla is making sure that people are not too confused about it by adding force touch controls for “Park, Reverse, Neutral, and Drive” drive modes at the base of the phone charger on the center console.

Ah ok. Well, hopefully the buttons are there in addition to whatever onscreen interface pops up. If that turn out to be the case, maybe it will even allow you to simply turn off the AI and just use the buttons exclusively.

Why make this so complicated? If I stop next to a car where there is a possibility I will back in to parallel park, I can't see how it knows what I want to do, there are no obstacles in front or back so it's time to make a guess.

I have a feeling it will turn out like how summon was early on, aka pretty poorly. Just give me the normal steering wheel, two stalks, with the new interior and I'd be set.

Not surprising, they're apparently very expensive to design and manufacture. The McLaren F1 borrows stalks from the E34

I'm imagining you're stopped behind a car at a light, and for some reason the guy in front shifts to reverse. You try to move backwards out of his way and the car says "oh, light is green, ONWARDS" when you hit the throttle.

I understand the trend toward putting everything on a screen for econoboxes. Cost savings. But come on...for a luxury car (BMW, MB, Audi, Cadillac, Alfa, etc.) there should be actual switches and buttons for those things that one wants to adjust while driving; the rest can go on the screen.

My BMW has self parking; in three plus years of ownership I have not used that once. I don't willingly give up control. I don't want to give up control to Elon either.
