We use two Twin XL mattresses strapped together to make one (effective) King size bed. This gives us the option to pick a firmness that we each prefer without having to compromise. We use 1.5" spacers to bring the top of both mattresses to matching height.

Once the bed is made, it is nearly impossible to tell that the bed is made up of two side-by-side mattresses.

Holy cow. You guys are nuts on the mattress prices. I didn't even know it went that way, but I haven't looked in years.

We're going to up to a king from our queen when we move into our new house. Looks like I need to start saving...

For those who think it is crazy to spend over $5k on a mattress (I used to be one of them), you got to try them to know the differences - meaning sleep on it for many nights. Another factor is the age. I am pretty sure you are in your late 20s or early 30s, so you may not have sleep quality issue or body pains so spending thousands on a mattress is not your priority.

We spent $5.5k on the Tempur-Pedic Breeze Cal-King exactly 2 years ago.

Before that, we had been using those cheap mattress around $350 for years (changed a new one every 3-4 years).

Our sleep quality has gone up and we have less body aches waking up.

When I was 20 I could sleep on bare dirt using my arm as a pillow.

Several decades and back and shoulder surgeries later, I need a mattress that offers some support. It's taken some of the fun out of traveling; you never know what you're going to find, irrespective of how much you're paying to stay somewhere. If I land somewhere with a shitty mattress, I get less fun out of being there.

Yes. I fear mine will eventually go the way of the Dodo bird but like you, my friends and colleagues have a blast going through the images. I'd say 95% of them came unbidden. It's really amazing!!

I like the beautyrest black. It's priced like you say, and is both soft to the initial touch but then is firm. It's coils below with foam up top. You can spin it around but you can't flip it over. Certainly worth every penny as long as you use it for a long as possible. It's probably the best if you have spine issues certainly.
