Yeah but at least (generally) he'll be only responsible for himself on a bike.

Yeah, this isn't going to go over well. I made a quick call to a friend of mine who runs a discount insurance office.

He said, here in TN, the quote through Direct General Insurance Company for SR22 insurance on a 2013 BMW 328i with no other history of accidents or traffic tickets was as follows:

500/500 comp & coll
10/50/10 PIP LIAB

$3,150 per 6mos.

He thought that was a pretty good rate based on the circumstances. He said that State Farm won't insurance him and that Progressive was substantially more. Of course this varies per state.

Oh. My. God.

I pay $485 per YEAR for way better coverage on my E93. Dear Lord, man - he just needs to start getting really friendly with Uber drivers.

20 years old, has DUI, biggest life priority shouldn't be getting into a BMW right now.

Not really. If done with intent, then it would be classified as insurance fraud and he will go to jail. Again.

If no intent, then he would still need to be listed as a driver on the mom's insurance, which would increase her insurance rates by a comparable amount as if he was just getting his own. If he wasn't an insured driver on the car, then if it gets in an accident, no one is gonna cover it.

Probably not the best plan.

Not sure how insurance works in the states but in ontario that would be a viable option.

Any vehicle that is insured will have the policy cover anyone operating it as well as any passengers, so a person in the same situation as op's cousin wouldn't even need his own insurance(unless the company finds out and makes him sign a document explicitly stating that he will not operate the vehicle under any circumstances).

If the cousin gets a shitbox and insures it, by the time the dui is off his record, his rates will be lower as opposed to just waiting for the record to clear and getting insured afterwards. Having a history of being insured(regardless of driving record) is still better than not having any insurance at all.

Fair point - I didn't see the Maple Leaf. Obviously things are different up there.

Yea, that and some nice STD insurance would be very helpful. Maybe throw in a bankruptcy rider with that.

I definitely get what you mean, it is circumvention.

Because insurance rates in Ontario are so high, people have been doing all kinds of things to save a few bucks including but not limited to changing their address to one in a rural area as ontario insurance premiums factor in your location within the province based on accident/claim rates for the given region, some have gone as far as registering and insuring their cars in quebec which has much lower rates, and the list goes on.

In my late teens and early 20s, I have registered cars to a family member and then insured them with myself as the "occasional" driver because of the insane rates.

Then he needs to loose his license if he is too stupid to pull over and stop driving for the timer.

A DUI is not a mistake. It is a CHOICE. Data shows that the average DUI driver has made this choice about 80 prior times before getting caught.

Then his mamma will be criminal liable for why she allowed a known drunk driver to operate her car. Mamma will also be liable for damages and lawsuits should a traffic crash happen. How much is mamma's house worth? Kill a kid and mamma can kiss that house good bye.

A known drunk? 1 in 5 drivers has a DUI on their record here. Guess I can never let anyone drive my car again...

I have always found it interesting that people have to pay an insane amount to insure their car when they have a breathalyzer in it. You would think that would make you less of a risk, unlike the rest of the population, it is physically impossible for them to drive their car impaired
