For a phenomenal boneless pork chop, and pretty good brisket, hit up Cooper's BBQ on Congress near 4th. They're a little over 1" thick, and only seasoned w/salt and pepper. The pecan, peach, and berry cobblers are spectacular, as well.

Just because I didn't list what research I've done ... doesn't mean you should assume I haven't done any. The fact that I mentioned "local spots that won't be packed with people" should've been a bit of a clue that I wasn't looking for published tourist info or typical tourist spots.

I've been on the website. I've also spoken to relatives in Dallas who've been there .... but I was also looking for some other insights that aren't listed on an obvious search from folks who have gone to an F1 race at COTA.

Hell, you live in Austin and all you can say is that witty quip. Gee ... surprised you didn't state to check out ASL and what concerts they have at that time. Seriously ... what insight from a local ... and not one restaurant recommendation, just go to 6th St.

It couldn't have killed you to say ... these are great off the beaten path places to eat.

* BJ's BBQ is really good local spot ... tender brisket but their ribs are great

* La Cantina has awesome taco's

* The Chop is a good place if you're looking for a nice steak that's under $20


OR

* The Austin Zoo or the Aquarium is a good way to kill time, neither are that expensive and can kill a few hours.




Indeed "Southern Hospitality" is dead ... and living their doesn't mean the folks that do ... are.

And without 1 mention of what else to bring to the track ... it would seem you haven't even gone to a F1 race at COTA.

This is extremely helpful, especially since we're going to be in Austin for 5 days. I totally forgot about an F1 experience likely going on. I don't mind it being packed, if/when it becomes to annoying we'll move on.

That's awesome! I'm a big fan of pork chops and the Mrs' likes brisket (although she's pretty easy to please, as long as it's not dry and fatty ... she's happy pappy). Knowing about the cobblers is great ... so many times you think they're going to be good they're not, so I generally skip them.

I had mentioned going to 6th Street and someone else said "don't go to 6th Street", so I gave you a link with a lot of information about 6th Street and said that the decision was up to you. How is that a quip or being condescending?

P.S. You are absolutely correct - I have never attended an F1 race at COTA. I have, however, participated in a half dozen HPDE events there, but that is not the same thing. Cheers.

Dude ... I get it ... let it go. Some times the written word does not come across as we intend, and this seems to be one of those instances. That's why in my retort to the other guy ... I stated that what you wrote "came off very condescending" as well as, "the way I read it." When you read either "Make your own decisions" and "the decision is (was) up to you" both read differently. Although they make the same basic point "make your own decisions" reads much more like .... don't rely on others to make your decision for you. Understand? If not, at least know that's how I read it.

I understand that you didn't mean for it to be read as a quip or that you were being condescending ... however at the time, regardless of what you said, it came of as condescending. Heck, you gave me a link to COTA ... that's up there with giving someone the or emojis when they ask a basic question without researching first. I do understand you were trying to be helpful, but it came across in a backhanded way ... whether you meant for it or not.

Don't waste your time at the F1 Experience. It is for people that want to be somewhere, but have no means. As you are traveling to Austin for the race I'd say go a bit more upscale for dinner. 6th Street is great if you like bars with good live music. Do dinner at someplace nice, then go and hear a good band on 6th Street.

One cool, and reasonable place, for lunch is Shady Grove. Try the fries that they make up as an appetizer. The place is a piece of 50s Americana. They make a good house bloody mary.

Re: Texas BBQ - I'm surprised no one has mentioned Franklin BBQ in Austin. One of the absolute best in the country - but if you're like me, no way in hell we're waiting in line 4-6 hours for ANY type food. I'll let you in on a little secret - the second best BBQ in the country can be found no more than 25 miles or so away from Austin in Taylor, TX - Louie Mueller BBQ. Hands down the best brisket, ribs, and sausage I've found. And, if you're REALLY hungry, you've GOT to try the beef rib. My goodness...

Louie Mueller in Taylor is where Aaron Franklin learned to cook brisket. It's worth the short drive if you can fit it into your schedule. Trust me, you won't be disappointed!

I asked the ticket office about bringing your own food/drinks. They only allow one sealed 20-oz drink per person and any other food/drink provisions are only made for those with allergies and/or infants/toddlers. You're otherwise limited to the trackside food and beverages which are somewhat pricey.

I'll throw in two dinner recommendations:

1 - Eddie V's on 5th - Reserve the one couple's booth in the lounge to make it extra special for the wife. Live (good) music after 7p in the lounge too. Seafood, aged bone-in ribeye, truffled mac and cheese and godiva molten chocolate cake are unmatched! Cocktails and wine are good too.

2 - Fabi + Rosi (assuming they're still around) - It's husband-wife joint (one Texan, one German) in an interesting setting with german fusion food. Nothing like it that I've been to before, also make reservations if they take them.

PSA - be very careful if you park in the grass anywhere around the track. Very very easy to get stuck in this kind of ground when it’s barely wet - can be especially bad with how much rain we’ve gotten the last few weeks.

Also get reservations ASAP if you haven’t already -might be too late. Lots of people here (specifically downtown) already.
