Reading this I get the feeling that it's main goal is to try to stop a ban of diesel cars in major European cities which is seriously being considered.

This to me reads like a long and winded plead "Please don't put that ban in place, we are working as fast as we can to bring more and more attractive electrified options to the market".

A diesel ban like that would be catastrophic for BMW.

Interresting that it mentions M cars as well. I'm curious about the timing of hybrid Ms.

I would bet my left nut it's this or something equally awful. There is zero chance this will be a good looking car, deep down you just know it. Still have nightmares of that iNext creature, yikes

Performance will probably be just fine though, and the same guys that currently say 0-60 times ΰ la Tesla don't matter will suddenly care a lot about that

Couple things

2025!! WTF! Where is Tesla going to be in 3 years, 5 years let alone 8 years from now? 2025 is an eternity. Silicon Valley companies like Tesla work on a different timeline than the slow automotive companies.

If BMW wants to compete they better step up the timeframe quite aggressively. If they don't when they arrive at 2025 they will find the world is already at 2040 and they are playing catch up just like they are today and just as far behind.

Not many people have cars in NY city. I'm guessing it's going to be a huge problem for apartment dwellers as well if they don't have a garage with electrical outlets.

Update:

BMW has likely previewed the i5 Concept in a short video it showed promoting electromobility. It looks identical to the design patent revealed last year.

See those design patents @ http://bmwi.bimmerpost.com/forums/sh....php?t=1311029

That looks awful. Why not just electrify the 5 series and call it the i5, much like they call the performance model the M5? This looks worse than the 3GT and 6GT and that's hard to accomplish

Do the Quandts have a blind child? How do these awful designs keep seeing the light of day?

I love driving the i3, but mein Gott, it's awful to look at and this is even worse. If you'd told me ten years ago that we'd be getting carbon fiber BMWs I'd have been excited. I'd certainly never have seen these shenanigans coming.

I think it looks good. It's no sports car, it's certainly a break from the traditional BMW look. It's better looking than the i3, almost like a stouter, more civilian i8. Maybe I am in the minority, but I like the move forward in design. We've been promised the car of the future for a long time, it's about time we take leaps instead of baby steps.

The render in silver looks legit. On par with most EV sedans out on the market with a BMW face.

That's exactly what I'd be looking for in an EV, something like a model 3, only better looking and with dials in front of the driver, not just a bloody great iPad in the centre of an otherwise barren dash!!!

I've lived with my i3 for over a month. Honestly, I don't miss the dials. That's not to say that I would replace my M3's dials with a screen. Im just saying that it doesn't kill the experience. Just look at the Audi virtual display. All digital if I'm not mistaken.
