Why would we stop complaining as gas companies here are reporting record profits by the billions every day? That's got to be the most ignorant thing I've ever heard. If someone else paid $50 a gallon would you not complain if yours hit $20? Lets think logically about this.
Further, the bad part about it is how fast it's rising. A year ago gas was around $0.75 cheaper. A month ago it was $0.40 cheaper. So it's risen more in the last month than it has in an entire year? Personally I wouldn't be surprised for one second if Bush was in the White House milking people out of every cent he can while he's still there to pad his oil filled pockets once he's out of office.

Yes, oil companies are to blame. not because they charge so much, but because they simply take the cash but DO NOT reinvest it into exploration (been working in private equity in oil sector lately, so I know about this a couple of things). You try selling a field that is in exploration stage and many big oil companies just say no thanks, we dont want to invest millions into dirt and wait 4-5 years before the field goes online. That's normal. So small guys are stuck with taking huge loans, developing it all on their own, and then the bigger companies come in and buy them out. So bottom line, since no reinvestment was made, the production will keep slowly declining for a while and that means oil price will keep growing. Another issue is that there is tons of speculators on commodities market. OPEC is absolutely 100% right in not increasing production. They know exactly what demand is and in fact NOW is highest since like WW2 days stockpiles of Gasoline in USA (for example). So demand is lessening. Also the USD recently has strengthened against the Euro which hasn't helped us here in Europe at the gas pump. Anyway, I hope that they ditch the dollar as global currency for oil trading, this will let it lose like the heavy climber hanging on the rope and we can move on - in fact the Euro denominated price of oil hasn't really changed much since the beginning of the year. It's the one in dollar that went through the roof.
