So I decided to sit down and crunch the numbers and thought I'd share them with everyone.

m240i gets about 240 miles per fill up at 20mpg, which is 12 gallons to fill, at $2.69 (price for premium where I'll be moving) is $32.28 per tank.

prospect vehicle gets 300 miles per fill up at 35 mpg, which is 8.6 gallons to fill, at $2.19 (price for regular) is $18.83 per tank.

I'm estimating about 302 miles per week of driving (40.4 miles round trip x 5 times a week + 100 miles for leisure driving) x 52 weeks = 15704 miles per year

15704/20mpg=785.2 gallons x 2.69 = $2112.19 per year in gas
15704/35mpg=448.69 gallons x 2.19 = $982.63 per year in gas
(for shits n giggles, did a hybrid, non plug in)
15704/45mpg=348.98 gallons x 2.19 = $764.27 per year in gas

Savings of $1129.56 to $1347.92 per year in fuel.

Checked the plug in hybrid calculator at https://www.fueleconomy.gov/feg/Find...on=phev1Prompt to see what a 2011 and 2017 chevy volt would save per year (because I know those are pretty cheap when bought used) and got these numbers.

The calculator has a bunch of plug in hybrids to select from if anyone wants to mess with it, but crunching the numbers pretty much helped me decide. If I will get another car to save money on gas, it will most likely be a plug in hybrid because of the extra savings. However, even then I'd need to insure it (and finance if that route is chosen) for around $130 a month to see even the slightest savings of a couple dollars a year (break even would be $130.77 a month).

Wonder how those electric motorcycles are coming along....

That’s my only real complaint with the 1/2 series. 13.7 gallon tank at 20-22mpg doesn’t go far. I typically have to fill up every 200-220 miles.

agreed. the car can get up to 32 on the highway, but the majority of my driving is stop and go... plus it's modded with a heavy footed driver so it gets less.

328d RWD sedan w/M-sport or adaptive suspension. Used they're in the $20-25k range (and still under warranty). Should easily be able to get 500mi per tank pretty easily, and diesel is cheap...

The Mazda 3 was a good recommendation too (get the 2.5L though).

The problem is you'd need to own those for 10 yrs to make any savings because the ICE equivalent is that much cheaper. Corolla is $6k less than prius for example and gets better mpg than your 240.

I thought one of the criteria was "fun to drive"?

Agree with the above, buy one of them if you really want to cut fuel use but aren't as interested in overall money savings. Compare the Volt to the Civic and the Volt saves about $350 per year in fuel (15k miles a year)

Well fun to drive if getting 35 mpg. I mentioned if I went hybrid I'd be trading that aspect for over 40 mpg.

I really liked my Toyota Avalon hybrid. You would probably want a Camry hybrid since it’s less expensive, lighter and faster than the Avalon. I couldn’t buy the Camry because the seats felt like church pews.

This is a big problem. I have a Mazda 3 hatch with a manual. I think the window sticker is something like 28/38. I typically get about 24 mpg in mixed driving and usually see about 32 on the highway.

If you're used to faster cars, slow cars are likely going to get lousy mileage. And my car's naturally aspirated. Add a turbo and a small displacement motor and it's just gonna get worse.

Back when I had my M Coupe, it was in the body shop after someone hit it and a friend let me borrow his STI. I filled it up, drove around for the day and was shocked to see the gas light on already. I drove 70 something miles on 10 gallons of gas. I drove it hard, but nothing crazy or even heavy speeding.

Favorite car I've owned for city driving. M Coupe was more fun for outright speed, but also liked to just do random things because of the E30 trailing arms. The Miata was just so predictable. You could four wheel drift it down residential streets and people would smile and wave. People just automatically cussed the M Coupe on principle.
