Anyone else hate when other guys call you Bud or Buddy?

This is a tough one. As a father-in-law, it can be a bit tough to call a son in law son unless they have opened the door for that option by calling you dad.

In my case, I chatted with my son-in-law before the wedding and asked him what he preferred. He told me he wanted to call me dad and me to call him son. It alleviated those uncomfortable moments when you are not sure what to call the other person.

Maybe he calls him pal not out of disrespect, but simply because he is in no man's land between his name and calling him son.

To me "My friend" sounds friendly ...

Over here in Belgium we say ...Hi my friend how are you ?
It means that you want to be friendly with the person (friend term) and that you like the person..

In some parts of the UK, bud, pal, mate are all used as terms of endearment. Perhaps this hasn't translated well to the US.

For the most part, it has. The exceptions are when someone is exceptionally sensitive to one of those terms for whatever reason or when an aggressive or confrontational tone is used. For example, Jeff Spicoli saying "Hey bud, what's your problem?!" was an example of using "bud" in an other than endearing way.

I just retired from 30+ years in law enforcement, and agree 100%, I worked in a very tough downtown division, a term of endearment was "guy". But bro, buddy, pal all flew too. In my experience and where I come from if someone calls you BOSS they're likely been in jail.
