I have not been but I would love to go to that area as well as Kathmandu, Nepal. There's a 2.5 week Everest base camp hike I've been eyeing for the past few years.

Yeah, I was just thinking yesterday how cool it would be to climb Everest. Wonder how much it costs for a guided expedition.

This is the place I've been looking at: http://www.mountainmarttreks.com/eve...-packages.html

The prices are very affordable. Lodging and 3 meals a day included in price.

The kicker is that you'd be averaging 6-7 hr hikes at 17,000-18,000 altitude/day

Visited Tibet in 1995 after our mountaineering expedition in the Everest area was cut short by a devastating storm. Did six trips to the Himalayas for trekking and climbing. Best to make arrangements for trekking directly with an agency in Kathmandu.

Yikes! That's some altitude! I'd have to spend a lot of time acclimate acclimating. I have to stay a night in Denver before heading to Keystone and the highest peak there is only about 14k.

Good luck with that!

Well hello there! I just got back from basecamp hike in March. Was one of the most insane trips ever. Fly into Kathmandu, then fly to the most dangerous airport in the world at Lukla, then you begin the 10-14 day trek. We did it in 10 days and trust me, without Diamox it would not have been possible. No upset stomach or altitude sickness for the entire trip, however as soon as I touched down on US soil I had dry and peeling hands and feet for 2 weeks ahha. And it was literally the coldest I have ever been. But what a trip.

I have over 2500 pics that I am slowly working through, should have an album up soon but here's a couple VERY loose edits:

Kathmandu

Lukla

Trekking:

Hillary Bridge:

Path to Tengboche (if you squint you can make it out on the ridge in the way distance towards center of photo)

Me:

In the clouds:

I'll throw a link to the full album once I'm done!

The following year, 96, was that really bad year for Everest...wasn't it? Not only from that movie they made about it...but I thought they also have some avalanches that killed folks in the base camps.

I can say, for as bad as it was at Titicaca (altitude wise) I'm not sure I'd want, or actually be able to go much higher. Walking 100 feet felt like running a few miles.
