Now in my conscious memory, I used to collect caterpillars, the yellow and black ones that roamed vancouver, B.C., when i was about 5-6, my friend and I would climb trees and collect about 60-70 of them in a round, white ice cream bucket (from the 80's if any of you are that age). We'd put leaves and branches inside for them, poke holes in the lid so they could breathe but not escape.
We had collected several buckets of these caterpillars, which disgusted my mother, so we thought what are we going to do with them? We just liked taking them from the tree and collecting them.. we would sell them! So, I don't know who bought them, or why, but we did manage to sell some, and got real money (prob like a few coins). Then at some point we got bored, took them outside and removed the lid. The sight of them beelining it for the woods across the sidewalk I won't forget. Then some years later, around 8-9 I tried to sell coke at school. Coca cola.. 15-25c for one can.. i had got them for 5c. I sold about 2 before the teachers found out and put a stop to it. So ended my money making career. |

Hell, no one should have shame in doing something they love, even if they aren't great at it. Unless, that is, you participation in a certain activity adversely affects others.
In that case, just avoid partaking in activity with people who would be negatively effected. I.e. I like cooking, but I'm no Gordon Ramsey. I cook for myself and for others if they ask. I don't try and impersonate chef. That's bad.

But it can't be like visiting hoes to let off steam, or anything that 'numbs' you - rather it has to be something that off the bat has natural motivation.. so not things that have an addictive or numbing element eg. drinking, gambling, certain forms of thrill seeking.. |

I agree, but speaking vocationally, you at least have to have some relative advantage compared to other people, otherwise it would be uneconomical for you to do it. But if its not for money, you can suck all you want at it i guess. But it probably wouldn't last long as everyone gets better doing what they enjoy, and you'd probably wouldn't enjoy it in the first place if you weren't good at some aspect of it. If you are just exercising for health, because achieving a goal is your objective, relative performance is irrelevant you are just trying to beat yourself. Which brings an interesting point, what is the difference between a "challenge" like this, and a true "passion"? |

I love mountain biking. However, given the choice to ride 5 days a week and work whenever I feel like it or work 5 days a week and ride whenever I feel like it. I'd pick going to work and ride whenever. So that does make me more passionate about work?

If I could travel around the world, sit at a coffee/drink shop, people watch, and wander around aimlessly - that would be pretty cool. New excites me while consistency comforts me.

Well, if your lucky and your career is also you passion, yes you have to be somewhat above the median. But, if your just doing it for fun, you don't have to be the best to just play. But, if you like doing something, and you do it often, you will improve. If you don't improve, and your not doing something often, can you really call it your passion? If you passionate about something, you should have a uncontrollable drive to partake in said thing. As far as challenge vs passion goes, that's more a personal thing. I see challenges as benchmarks that must be met/beat. These challenges can be related to my passions, or stuff that isn't. If I fail at meeting a challenge, I'll most likely be bummed out. That said, I've learned a lot from my failures, so it's not all bad. |

_________________________ But there are lots of people who had a passion for something. Figured out how to make money out of it and doing that killed their passion. Then there are people who are passionate about many things, most of which won't produce enough income to enjoy all of them. I'm not passionate about what i do. But i'm relatively good at it. I don't look forward to it and i'd almost always rather be doing something else. But being fairly good at it provides me with enough income to experience everything that i am passionate about fairly regularly. I can't think of much worse than building a career out of something you love, only to have making a career out of it cause you to to loath it. Several years ago I spent many, many hours thinking of different things i'd rather do for a living. I finally realized that if i had used that time to contemplate how i could increase net profit by even a .5% or how i could increase autonomy within my company that i'd have that much more time and money to do the things that i enjoy. just my $.02

Passion for me is to learn new things.
I find it hilarious how many miss out on things just because they are not good at them. Why be the best if you can try and laugh at yourself at the end of the day.

You, ma'am, are an anomaly. Not everyone is fortunate enough to have the same outlook on life as you.

A good example of my insanity is knitting. It is a mandatory skill here in finland. You don't leave third grade without it... Except I did. Never learned. I fucking sucked at everything from cooking to knitting and let's not talk about sewing. I can honestly say that when after army I moved out from my parents house, I feared of dying of hunger ever more than I did while eating the horrible things my mother gave as sustenance. Long story short, I cook, I knit what ever I can't buy (jesus people have zero taste. I have to do my own summer dresses!!) and I've fixed a car or two with bubble gum and duct tape. I've learned in this life that the worst lessons ever were geography to pass, since getting lost is very hard if you know your main rivers and cities in a few continents. Learn what you need, love what you want. A very wise dog taught me to appreciate life's most important thing: Naps. Nobody ever is passionate about naps but everyone envies the person who can have one.
