Complete embarrassment.

We now have no idea how the cars stack up against each other. Haas got screwed, their car has some good speed.

Lol, how thick are these team managers? McLaren is the worst, the car looks way better but the team just let the drivers sit in pit waiting for their time to expire WTF? If they are that clueless there seem to be no hope really. With this level of stupidity there's no saying if the new rules are good or bad...

If you can't lay down a secure top 5 time in the first lap ( Benz or Fezza ) in each session you need to be out there continuously improving not sit in the effing pit letting the time expire. FIA made it clear this is what they wanted with the new rules and the teams are sitting like idiots in the pit waiting until they have no chance completing a lap in time. Unbelievable. You can't blame the new rules until you understand them...

It's a risk and reward thing. The teams are reacting to and covering each other. If no one is out pushing for your spot and if you don't think you can beat the guy ahead, no point in going out and risking a crash. The old format took advantage of an improving track, so drivers were motivated to run deep into the session. Hopefully they will go back to what worked.

Haas and Mclaren didn't get to show their speed. This may make the race interesting.

The usual suspects 1/2. I'm guessing the current pecking order is:

Mercedes
Ferrari
Torro Rosso/Williams
Redbull
Force India/Mclaren/Renault
Haas
Sauber/Manor

No. The cars have to do their 1st lap in massive traffic, then they pit and make adjustments. One lap to pit, make changes, and another lap to get to speed, and then the timed lap is 1:30 itself. So if they're in the pit, and there's not sufficient time to go out and do a slow lap + a timed lap, why bother? The cars don't just stay out and keep doing laps until they "get it right", it doesn't work that way. Vettel said it best - everyone knew this would be the result, but apparently someone gave it the go-ahead, so here we are.

Just lol.

Complete disaster, Mercedes dominating yet again and the most boring qualifying session of anything I've seen in my life.

F1 is complete garbage.

This qualifying system really hurts the sport from the fans perspective, complete fail for what they need to do. Now it just shifts the last 4-5 minutes of the quali session into the first 4-5 minutes. I can see trying to get the cars out sooner as the top teams would sit in the pits for the first 8-10 minutes of a session previously, then come out...this system just reverses it...get your laps in then you don't have enough time at the bottom to get round for another fast lap so why bother? Thumbs down.

Glad to see Haas make a great debut and thus far have a good weekend. Going to be a lot of Mercedes at the front until mid season I'm afraid, but today really didn't show what these guys can do. If good weather tomorrow that will show the pecking order. Excited...

What a complete joke!! Bernie is a sneaky little snake and is slithering his way to more $$$ somehow b/c of this circus. I can't figure it myself, but you best believe he is up to something for his benefit and his investors: A lot of buy/sell/buy/sell going on here.

I was looking forward to a nice relaxing morning w/breakfast, coffee, and the start of the F1 season. In turn, I was mad and wired for an hour b/c of this new system. Between this, new engine blueprint, noise, and Merc domination I am loosing interest fast and I have been a diehard F1 fan for 20 years.

You can't be out there continuously on supersofts, they have one maybe two laps in them. Then on top of that they only have so many sets of them. Ferrari got behind eightball having to use two sets of supersofts in session two. Also like others said they need to come in make adjustments to car. Qualifying isn't a race, they shouldn't be coming in making race speed pit stops. We should be seeing the teams adjust the cars for a pinnacle lap.

On one hand I thought today's qualifying was a complete joke. Like I was predicting, I knew the time limitations would screw some drivers out even though they had the capability to improve their times (i.e. the HAAS cars and Kvyat). Then on the other hand this is the first time this new qualifying format is being used so I want to see what the teams learn from this and see how they make improvements for the next race. I always thought the old qualifying format was great so I don't even know why this new one was introduced anyways.

I agree....Ferrari could easily have gone out again but seemingly decided not to in order to send a message more than anything else (or they just know they have no more pace to give). But if this format doesn't go away then they will be forced to adapt. Upper teams will use fewer tires, lower teams this will be an all out sprint...seems to be more of a tax to them than anything. I like the adjust to the pinnacle lap approach of the old system myself.

As the teams you are stuck thinking the old way. These new rules need new ways. That's the reason for the change. Adjustments, sure but if you watched that's not what's going on 99% of the time they were in the pit. They sit in a car no one is working on. Total fail by the teams to understand how to run under the new rules.

Most teams showed they had more in the car but blew it, solely due to shitty strategy in how to run the new format and got caught out.

But you say they should be out there continuously improving. They don't enough sets of supersofts to be doing that. In the past they went out on another set of tires(soft) and set a banker lap in beginning of session. Then put on supersofts as needed to improve on their time. They don't have unlimited sets of supersofts for the weekend. There is a reason teams chose not to go out and improve their times.

Rear Wing

Does anyone know what the funny "V" ding in the center of the rear wing is for?

Yeah, this is an opportunity for Bernie to show that his is cost conscious and does not it to cost too much to play. What's it cost to run a season in F1 these days. Can you do it for $100 mil?

No cars on the track for the last few minutes of Q3 was a joke.
