There really is more to Mardi Gras than your vision of it. Head downtown, to the French Quarter and yes, what you envision is happening. Plenty of other, more reasonable fun to be had elsewhere. Lots of interesting eating and drinking places, good music. A little planning is all it takes...

I just looked and there is a great lineup. I haven't been there in years but maybe my wife and I will think about another trip.
