Is it mechanical flaps that are actuated to alter the sound output or some JBL speakers wired in to the muffler??

If there is any power gain it could be interesting.

No flaps with this exhaust.
There is a speaker in that bulbous casing, which is not connected to the actual exhaust pipes. It has its own outlet.

I'd expect no power gains for stock engines, with the exception of the 335d which suffers from increased back pressure.
I'd also expect possible low power gains for tuned cars (includes M-PPK), as the muffler is much smaller and seems not to be a reflector type as stock.

So this exhaust doesnt produce sound, but it has some speakers which produces sound? 3.0 V6 TDI with a Milltek exhaust gives stunning sound, I hope something similar for a 430d (not with a speakers).

Not a chance. Particle filter and Oxi cat kills every sound.
You'd have to remove both combined with a straight pipe to get something like 'sound'.
This is an Alpina D3 with straight pipe from cats. This is all you get:

I badly want this in my 228i.
As a matter of fact - I thought I invented this but clearly, BMW beat me to market
I was planning to run my internal ASD line feed through an amp to a weatherproof speaker under the car next to the stock muffler.

That's basically what this system does, in a nice single package, and if course with its own ASD module with sounds appropriate for the outside. I bet it's going to crackle and pop like crazy. Think about the hacking possibilities, a gurgling muscle V8 or a lambo V12.

Sorry guys hate the idea as much as you want but this is the future, I wouldn't be surprised to see something like this on electric cars soon. Very much like the turn signal clicking you hear in your car is not a relay clicking anymore...it's just a sound effect. It could beep or sing but people still insist on the click...

I had this on my Mercedes C250 cdi and hated it with a passion.. It was so bad I sold the car 3 months after I got it as I couldn't remove the exhaust (tried merc and aftermarket). It would sound great when giving it some but awful on idle, it was also very artificial..

On the merc it was a speaker that was put in a metal box then connected to power and a control unit. It would change tone depending on what mode the car was in (sport etc). On the merc they removed a silencer at the back and the speaker replaced it, it made it very boomy when ticking over

The sound is for outside not inside the car and if I am honest is sounded like it was fake.

The Audi system is very similar however that does sound better but still fake.

I really hope BMW have cracked it as my experience has been pretty bad with this sort of system

Interesting.

Maybe it not collaborates so well with today's fuel-saving policy wasting electrical energy to create exhaust sound.

"In conjunction with the BMW M Performance exhaust system Active Sound, vehicles with 18d engines and all 20ds produced before July 2015 are fitted with an additional tailpipe."

Does this imply that 18d and 20ds produced after July 2015 will come with 2 tailpipes from the factory? I noticed on BMW USA website that 328d (our 320d) sedan and wagon both have 2 tailpipes but figured it was a mistake just like before. I just read a review of a new 320d in Europe and it had 2 tailpipes as well.

No, only the LCI 320d has gotten a second tailpipe. 318d remains with single pipe.

Interesting, so the US 328d models "should" also ge the second tailpipe.

420d with 190 hp (since March or April 2015) got second tailpipe. Finally, because single tailpipe looks like a joke IMO.

Does anyone know a price of this performance Active sound exhaust? I hoped BMW will show how it sounds in video..

Huge market for bad sounding high powered diesels? But when please?

Hi,

I have been in touch with a company in Germany who seem to be doing very well out of this Sound Generator. The German market is advanced. UK I can't find anything:

www.incarstyle.de

Their videos on youtube show how you can get an adjustable V8 deep 'warble' sound from your car. Controlled via your cruise controls- on/off/ volume, sound selection

I also contacted Supersprint and the Italians are also currently doing testing on a more integrated version using the same kit. So that the sound comes from the pipes than a seperate pipe under the car that basically drowns out the existing exhaust noise. Both versions are to be removable so you can take it onto your next car. They are not clear on steering wheel integration as the standard kit comes with a control module you would find space for on your dash which isn't so good for obvious reasons.

The company that makes it and has the monopoly is Kufatec

https://www.kufatec.de/shop/de/sound...mw-4er-f-serie

It looks like BMW have taken this and integrated it using the German principle of welding it to the external exhaust.

It sounds amazing on You Tube so was delighted to see BMW looking to offer it soon.

Does anyone know when?

Yes, it needs to sound realistic so I think only suits certain cars and can't be too loud but it is the only solution you will get for a diesel.

Prices from the German company?
c800 euros for a left/right 90mm exhaust with the SG already added leaving only mounting and electronic install to be done. A bit more for blackpipes.
The SG is 1300 euros
A new left/right valance is required if you have like me the 335d which has twin pipes at the left.- 90 euros.

So if BMW offer it direct, it will be better as it feels more reassuring. My BMW garage offered to fit the german version no problem with no effect on the warranty. C£500 pound or less if no problems arise.

Thoughts ?

This "Kufatec" system sounds pretty impressive on Youtube. I like how they let you select different sounds and customize it. I bet you BMW won't do that.
What I'm missing is the extras, like the crackles and pops. I love what the -real- MPE does, I just don't like the fact that you can't turn it off. (I have a long commute and not sure I want to start my day with a headache every morning at 7.)
