IMO, cars that are not popular today or during their time probably have the best chance of becoming collectible. This is, of course, outside of any exotic/hypercar.

For me I think it's the rare versions of popular cars that in particular have a performance advantage like a COPO Camara or 350R mustang.
Past examples are Hemi '70s cars, Chevelle LS6, Fairlane Thunderbolt, Super Duty '73 Trans Am, L88 corvette, Yenkos, etc. |

Porsche 997 GT3 RS 4.0 - best manual 911 that was ever made.
Ferrari 458 Speciale - last N/A V8 Fezza; highest specific output N/A V8 in production. Ford GT350R - first mass produced FPC V8; likely to be Ford's highest output N/A motor in history. Lexus LFA - seriously underrated car that I know will have a cult following in the future. Dodge Hellcat twins - mint, stock examples will be sought after gems in the future. Toyobaru GT86 twins - unmolested models will be go-to drift-aru hot items.

some of the ONLY cars that have only APPRECIATED in price after their initial sale in the past 10-20 years are:
BMW 1M Ford GT 911 GT3 4.0 so....real investment grade collector cars? 1M Cayman GT4 (will not depreciate...just like the 1M) any 911 GT3 or GT3 RS as for 'desirable' or 'cult following' type cars: 'stock' WRX and STIs 'stock' Evos S2000 MK1 Audi TT E46 M3 B5 S4 Challenger Hellcat CTS-V wagons and no...i have no conflict of interest. I have 62k miles on my 1M and daily drive it......will never sell it. |

1992 Firehawk. Only 25 were made with a number of varying options not offered in normal cars (roll cage, fuel cell, etc.) as well as a couple different motors offered. I'm not sure if there are two identical '92 Hawks.
'91 GMC Syclone will also get there for good examples, though not nearly as rare. '89 Turbo TA was already mentioned. Let's not forget the '89 Calloway Corvette. 2000 Cobra R, though was overpriced and underperforming for the money at the time, will fetch a pretty sum in the future. '99 30th Anv TA has made in some numbers and has held its value very well. MKIV Supra of course will hold its value (and still fetches too much money today). Only reason the 3000 GT VR4 Spyder will because it is rare/unique; the non-spyder will fetch a little if it is an unmolested example in a few years just because most are ragged out (as well as the Turbo Stealth). FD RX7 due to low numbers out there. Turbo MKII MR2 and Supercharged MK1 MR2 (that haven't melted away with rust) will eventually fetch a good dime - but again, most are ragged out at this point. I doubt anyone will care about the DSM cars (Laser/Eclipse/Talon). Conquest TSi might have a fighting chance for collectability. |

CLK63 Black Series.. I mean, I'm sure u all remember Clarkson going on and on about it. The used market for these seems very interesting, with examples going for high 50s/low 60s anywhere up to the 100k

Despite the fact that both these cars are hideous, as long as they're in mint condition they'll probably end up holding their value.
