"It is not possible to make all M cars sporty and dynamic;"
And that is why you should buy a Porsche instead. M needs to up their game.

But its the character of the cars, which with the M4 in this is case is a mad brute, sliding around and having a really strong front engine-RWD layout. You can go ahead and buy a Porsche, it is a level above anything else, the benchmark. I won't, everyone has one and they don't look nearly as aggressive. |

1) People, remember that BMW is still a business, not some lovechild in some car nerd's garage. Any product launch has to show potential for profit or build the brand in some way.
2) "M" is not simply a "car purist" endeavor and its definition will continue to evolve with time (e.g. 10 years ago the concept of an M car with turbos was "unthinkable", as was an M SUV). I'm sure the concept of the first M5 was ridiculous to many "car purists" of the day (and still is when you talk to people outside of our "german performance/luxury bubble". M will only be "officially dead" when M cars are no longer produced. That being said the "not all M cars can be sporty and dynamic" comment is certainly a little out of place... I wouldn't read too much into it really. Let the products speak for themselves when released.

5against8 Points well made.
It's abundantly clear BMW is not going to remain stagnant and rely on it's legacy but evolve, while retaining its core values and move into the twenty first century. |

Oh dear here's a guy who wants to plonk an M badge on BMWs and will just want to shift numbers and doesn't appear to be that interested in the things that historically made M special. Sad really

bar the up coming M2 (maybe) in these days if you want a proper sports car its either porsche or used BM. I went for both. Got myself a new macan as a daily driver and used Z4m coup. Dont get me wrong I love the M5 and the M3 and the new X6/X5 M look the part but they are not sports car´s. You get as much involvent and connection to an M car these days as you get with an X box. Sorry to all owners but its true. I would rather have 2nd E46 M3 CSL or V10 M6 than any modern machinery despite all there flaws - as a proper sports car of course. With that said none of those machines would come close to the new M3 as an allrounder. Its brilliant for a daily driver. But I wouldnt call the F M3 a sports car. More a very very fast sedan. And I have driven all of the cars mentioned above except the M6 V10 drove the M5

I think his sentiments are refreshing because he's being honest and addressing the elephant in the room - that not all M's can be sporty and dynamic, that the M6 makes a great race car when all the comfort bits are stripped, etc. He basically admits that M integrates comfort on purpose to compromise for the bean counters, and that they can very well build a "balls to the wall" brutal M5, but the general public wouldn't like it as much as the comfortable boat we have today. Although these facts are sad, at least we're hearing something different than smoke blowing and getting the wool pulled over our eyes.

Do people really think that "sporty" equates to race car? When did this happen?
Sporty is what every other car company in the world has been trying to market copy from BMW for the last 15+ years. If Hyundai can make a sporty Kia Rondo, then why can't every M be sporty and dynamic? No standard M to my knowledge has ever been a racer. They have defined the essence of what it is to be agile street monsters. Until Now it would seem. Meh.

Actually he contradicts himself in the same paragraph:
"It is not possible to make all M cars sporty and dynamic"... "if we did"... "we would miss all the people looking for a car that combines sportiness with luxury." So how many definitions of Sporty or Sportiness are? Aesthetically? Powerful? nimble and dynamic? rough suspension? I think the definition of M is possibly the best version of a BMW, sportier and more luxurious. |

It took years to build the M reputation... and they're going to burn it up in a few short years. I miss the the BMW of a few years ago... lost and gone forever. |

A M car is a normal car with high power. And the M cars too come will also have high power outputs. I don't really care that much about how they achieve the high performance. I would not like to buy the next gen m5 if its much slower than the e63 amg. If you don't like this just buy a gt86 or something.
I would love to se a awd 700hp m5. And a rwd m2 with 400+++hp Last edited by absolutebimmer; 01-16-2015 at 06:37 PM.. |
